10 Actors Who Had Their Chances to Shine on “Game of Thrones” But Casting Directors Chose Others

Characters from our favorite series are strongly associated with certain actors, their appearance and behavior. And Game of Thrones fans, even awake in the middle of the night, will be able to describe Sansa Stark in detail. But have you ever wondered what your favorite characters would look like if other actors played them?

We, from awesome.clubsometimes we think about it and fortunately we have the possibility to visualize how the characters of the beloved series would be, if they were lived by other interpreters.

Mance Rayder, King-Beyond-The-Wall — Dominic West

Dominic West admitted to having turned down the invitation to act in the series, but did not reveal the role he was offered. However, we can assume it was Mance Rayder’s, as Dominic gave up filming when he found out that he would need to spend time away from his family in Reykjavik, where they recorded most of the scenes that take place north of the Wall. The character ended up being played by the charismatic Ciarán Hinds, and nobody knows if the smiling Dominic West would have managed to please so much.

Sansa Stark – Izzy Meikle-Small

The actress, who at the time of the audition was just 17 years old, said she wasn’t too upset when she learned she didn’t pass the audition. In the young woman’s opinion, the script included many spicy scenes, which made her worried, in addition to her parents not being very happy to see her in sensual shots. Sophie Turner, however, accepted the role without hesitation and was not mistaken: in most scenes, Sansa Stark looks as chaste as possible. There’s nothing wrong with showing parents a character like this, after all, that’s the actors’ job.

Yara GreyjoyLily Allen

Lily Allen could appear in the series alongside her brother, Alfie Allen, who landed the role of Theon Greyjoy. However, after reading the script, Lily declined the invitation. The actress revealed to be bothered by a very spicy and ambiguous scene, which would have her participation. Ultimately, Greyjoy’s sister was played by Gemma Whelan.

Stannis Baratheon – Mark Strong

It is said that Mark was asked to take on the role of Stannis. He neither denies the rumors nor confirms them. The actor simply does not reveal which character he could play because he does not want the colleague who took the role to feel bad that his name was not the first to be remembered for the job.

Roslin Frey (Tully) — Perdita Weeks

The actress turned down the role in Game of Thrones to dedicate herself to another project. However, she was unlucky, as her recordings were postponed. She even tried to return to the cast of Game of Thrones, but the directors of the acclaimed series had already invited actress Alexandra Dowling, who did perfectly as Roslin.

Lyanna Mormont – Millie Bobby Brown

Catelyn Stark-Jennifer Ehle

Jennifer played Catelyn Stark in the pilot episode, but ended up giving up the role to dedicate herself to the care of her newborn daughter. At the start of filming, the girl was only seven months old, and the actress decided that it was still too early to return to work.

High Sparrow / High Sparrow — Jared Harris

Today, it’s hard to imagine another actor like the High Sparrow, but Jared Harris, current star of the series Foundation, confessed in an interview that he could have lived the role of leader of the religious movement ‘Sparrows’. We were curious to know what the character with Jared Harris’ sarcastic expression would look like.

Robert I Baratheon — Conleth Hill

Conleth Hill, who played Lord Varys, is said to have auditioned for the role of King Robert. We’re sure he’d do well as the monarch, but as fans of the show, we’re glad we didn’t accept the proposal, otherwise we’d have to say goodbye to him in the first season.

Xaro Xhoan Daxos — Mahershala Ali

Ali himself admitted that his audition for the role of the powerful merchant prince was a real disaster. “It was one of the worst auditions of my life,” he declared. However, we have no doubt that the two-time Oscar winner would be very convincing as Xaro.
