Is it possible to travel with children and have fun?

It is not uncommon for families to think twice before setting foot on the road with their children, especially if the plans involve traveling by collective means such as a bus or plane. If everything goes well during the trip, the arrival at the final destination – a hotel or inn, for example – comes loaded with new concerns: will the children behave during meals? Will they be able to cry during the night disturbing those sleeping in close rooms? And so on…

To talk about so many clichés in the life of #realmaternity, CLAUDIA participated, at the invitation of Airbnb, in the #TravelLikeaMom debate. Editor Lia Rizzo, mother of Catarina, 3, and stepmother of Bruno, 23, shared experiences and perceptions alongside influencer Suzana Gullo and Renata Menezes, editor of Crescer magazine. The conversation was mediated by Laura Capanema, producer of digital content for Latin America at Airbnb.

For Lia, CLAUDIA’s editor, travel has always been a relevant topic within her motherhood, not just because of concerns about traveling with a child, but because of the need she always felt to travel alone, without children or family. “It never crossed my mind that traveling with my daughter would be difficult. My fear was actually not having a lonely travel experience anymore, something very constant in my life before becoming a mother”.

Renata said that her son, João, 8 years old, started traveling with his family at the age of three months. The baby’s first time on the road was the husband’s initiative, who planned the trip to try to cheer up his wife who was going through a difficult puerperium. Faced with her resistance to taking the tiny boy to a hotel, her father rented a house in Copacabana.

Suzanna, mother of three children, Romeo, 13, Donatella, 9 and Stefano, 8, from an early age made an effort to make her children love traveling like she did. Her great adaptation happened with the discovery that her eldest son was autistic. “I have to think about him, he always needs to have a routine, a calmer trip, it’s not something simple to plan. However, it is far from impossible.” The influencer also said that she strives to have individual trips or experiences with each of her children.

Kitchen, the big difference!

The common sense among all of them was about the practicality that renting a house or apartment brings to the family trip, in addition to the savings made possible by the ease of having a kitchen in the properties.

According to Airbnb, in 2018 alone, 640,000 families booked a property through the platform. Of these reservations, 50% were made by women. Among the most sought after items to choose from available properties are, in that order, kitchen, television and Wi-Fi.

At the top of the most popular destinations in Brazil are Gramado and Canela, in Rio Grande do Sul, Florianópolis, in Santa Catarina, and Ubatuba, on the north coast of São Paulo.
