Why are blue-eyed people so unique?

There are no two people in the world with exactly the same eye color. But if you are lucky enough to have eyes the color of the sky, you can consider yourself an even more unique and special person, even the owner of “superpowers”.

There is no blue pigment in the eyes. Most people have brown eyes. This hue comes from melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Blue eyes acquire their color as a result of the reflection of light. It’s the same effect that makes the ocean and sky appear blue.

Blue eyes can have different colors depending on lighting conditions. This is because they get their color from incoming and reflected light. You can also give them brighter or duller tones, depending on the makeup you choose.

A team of scientists at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, found that all people with blue eyes may be related to some level. In the period between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago, everyone probably had brown eyes, but at some point, the gene that controls the level of melanin mutated. This, in turn, limited the amount of melanin we could produce and “diluted” brown eyes into blue ones. All blue-eyed people, therefore, inherited this genetic “change” at exactly the same point in their DNA.

Most people have brown eyes, while only 8% to 10% are lucky enough to have blue eyes. According to the World Atlas, most blue-eyed people live in Europe. And Finland has the highest percentage of people with these characteristics.

When a baby is born, you don’t know what color its eyes will be after it grows up. At birth, babies lack melanin in the iris — the part of the eye that defines its color. After six months, however, the genes determine the amount of melanin contained in the iris. Depending on this factor, the eyes can remain blue or become grayish, green or brown.

If your eyes are light, it’s important to be extra careful in protecting them. Ophthalmologists believe that people with these characteristics tend to be more sensitive to light. As blue eyes have pigment that absorbs light in a smaller proportion than brown eyes, a greater amount of light can pass through the iris and damage the eyes.

People with light irises are lucky to have a higher pain tolerance than those with dark eyes. A researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, interviewed 58 pregnant women and found that those with blue or green eyes felt less pain and coped better with labor. The scientist believes that genes linked to melanin can strongly influence the issue.
