10 Details of “Red: Growing Up is a Beast” That Make It One of the Most Enchanting Animations

It’s not new that Disney produces animated films that not only bring entertainment to the public, but also really important implicit messages — both for us and for the little ones. And in Red: Growing up is a Beast, this was no different. In the plot, however, the studio’s cinematographic universe expanded creativity and brought to the public themes related to adolescence and the maturation process during this period. What makes this film, at least, very special!

During one of the scenes at the school where Meilin studies with her friends, Priya, Miriam and Abby, the probably most famous clownfish on the big screen gains its space: it appears “sticky” on one of the doors of the bathroom stalls. And, even though Finding Nemo is a success from the early 2000s, the reference is nothing more than a mere memory, since the plot takes place at the same time.

In the scene in which the protagonist Meilin, as Red Panda, runs through the city of Toronto to see the concert of her favorite band, 4Town, it is possible to notice that the Pizza Planet car, recurring in the Toy Story franchise films, appears parked in the street. Well, the cuisine of this place must be really wonderful, right?

Repeated figure in many Disney films, of course in Red — Growing up is a Beast, she couldn’t be left out either. It’s when Meilin and her friends are on the roof, at Tyler’s party, that we can see the Pixar ball in the pool — and, even though it appeared quite subtly, it didn’t go unnoticed by the most attentive eyes.

Right at the beginning of the film, Meilin reveals her crush on one of the boys who appear in the school hallway. On her blouse, therefore, there is the name of a band well known to Viva fans: Life is a Party: the Scapula, which plays during the plot’s talent show. But beyond that, at another point in the narrative, another detail is visible: the typical colorful flags on the streets of Mexico, essentially present in Viva: A Vida é uma Festa. Cute, isn’t it?

For a long time now, Disney has been betting on animations based on different places on the globe — thus focusing on the aspects and customs of a certain people. In Red — Crescer é uma Fera, this was no different, since the studio addresses not only one culture, but two: the protagonist Meilin, as well as her family, are Chinese-Canadian. Which means her origins are both Chinese and Canadian.

In one of the most important moments of the narrative, the teenager appears wearing a Hanfu, one of the typical Chinese costumes, a clear reference to Asian culture — while, on another occasion, she appears wearing a blouse with the Canadian flag. What’s more, his school’s sports jersey mascot is a bear, one of the country’s main and most viewed animals. Which makes us think that choosing the cat for the plot may have been a way that the producers found to immerse themselves in the local culture. Cool, isn’t it?

In one of the emblematic scenes of the animation, the moment when Meilin’s mother finds her diary, it is possible to observe a character already known for a long time by Disney fans, on the cover of the notebook: the Bunny protagonist of the short Toca. By coincidence or not, Madeline Sharafian, who, in addition to being a director, is responsible for the art department in certain studio projects, was also in charge of both productions. Quite a call, isn’t it?

Meilin’s room seems to hide more than a diary: in one of the takes set in the same space, it is possible to observe another character from the Disney Universe, the protagonist Purl, from the homonymous short released in 2018. She appears as a key chain hanging under her desk. girl. Curious, right?

Another short that won a reference in the plot was Bao, from 2018. As Meilin walks through the streets, you can see a sign with the logo of the story that involves cooking. The curious thing is that both Meilin’s trajectory and Bao’s narrative take place in Toronto’s ChinaTown.

This is not the first time that the code “A113” has appeared in Disney animations. This is an easter egg created by the studio’s artists and animators that refers to the classroom they studied at the California Institute of the Arts. In the plot, it can be seen during the passage of the final credits, on a ticket to the band 4Town concert.

Some fans often say that Disney always anticipates an easter egg of the next film that will be released. We don’t know if this actually happens. But, in Red, Grow is a Beast, it seems that the aforementioned “pattern” was maintained.

In one of the scenes, Miriam Mendelsohn’s skateboard shows two figures that represent the Lightyear animation, subsequent to Meilin’s story, therefore. The Sox robot kitten, protagonist Buzz Lightyear’s pet, and the Star Command symbol, which is centered on his space suit.

But what about the movie that preceded Red, Growing Up is a Beast? Did he also indicate through a reference what was to come?
