How to pray the Hail Queen, the Catholic prayer

How did Salve Rainha come about?

The origin of this famous prayer is uncertain, many stories are told about it. While some maintain that it was a hymn of the fighters of the First Crusade, the most likely and shared idea is that it was composed by the German Benedictine monk Herman Contrat (1013 – 1054), in 1050.

He was born with many health problems, including rickets, cleft palate, cerebral palsy and amyotrophic sclerosis. This made it difficult for him to move and he hardly spoke. His parents could not bear the burden of raising a child with so many problems and handed him over to the Beneficent monks at the age of 7. At the monastery, he challenged his limits and never lost his faith. He studied hard and became an astronomer, mathematician, physicist, theologian, poet and musician. In the last years of his life, he still became blind.

He would have composed Salve-Rainha, but not exactly as we know it today. Originally, it ended with “Show us Jesus, blessed fruit of your womb. Amen”. It was Saint Bernard who would have included “O clemens, O Pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria” (“O clement, O pious, O ever sweet, Virgin Mary”).

What do you say before praying the Hail Queen?

The strong prayer directed to Our Lady can be done alone or with complements. Many use a short text before starting:

“We give you infinite thanks, O Sovereign Queen, for the benefits that we receive every day from your maternal hands. Deign, now and forever, to take us under your powerful protection and to thank you even more, we greet you with a Hail Queen.”

How do you pray the Hail Queen?

You can pray the Hail Queen daily, when you are calmest and in a place where you will not be interrupted. If you want, it’s worth lighting a candle or incense to help with the connection. Close your eyes, talk to Maria about your afflictions and dreams, visualize her image and read the prayer, with confidence and gratitude.

Novena of the 9 Hail Queens

Would you like to ask the Virgin Mary for help in achieving a grace? The novena of the nine Hail Queens can be a gamble. As the name suggests, the ritual must be repeated for nine consecutive days. It consists of an opening prayer, a statement of the request, nine Hail Queens and a final sentence. Check the texts:

1 – Opening prayer:

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and ignite in them the fire of your love. Send Your Spirit and everything will be created and you will renew the face of the earth. Let us pray: O God, who instructed the hearts of your faithful, with the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that we rightly appreciate all things according to the same Spirit and enjoy his consolation. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

2 – Tell Jesus and Mary what your intention is for the novena.

3 – Proclaim the Hail Queen prayer nine times:

Hail, Queen, Mother of mercy, life, sweetness and our hope, hail! We cry out to you, the exiled children of Eve; to you we sigh, groaning and crying in this vale of tears.
