How to have a vegetable garden in a small apartment

Having a space facing plants indoors makes the atmosphere more relaxing and cozy. But in addition, having a vegetable garden also makes it a lot easier when preparing meals.

With that in mind, we talked to the agroecologist Alessandra Nahra for some tips on how to set up a vegetable garden in small apartments🇧🇷 Although it looks challenging, it’s not that complicated and the result is worth it! Check out:

Find the ideal place

First of all, it is necessary to take into account that, in order to have a vegetable garden, it is necessary to find a place where there is sunlight. “Most vegetables, seasonings and aromatics need at least five hours of sunlight a day🇧🇷 But there are some species that can do well with less sun”, says Alessandra Nahra.

If there is no sunlight entering your apartment, the alternative is to use plants that survive with less lightingas parsley, lettuce, oregano, mint, spinach and lemongrass🇧🇷

To make better use of the spaces, a tip is to make vertical structures and hang them on the walls, so you can have, in a smaller space, a good amount of containers and vases to plant.

If you don’t have a lot of space on the walls, you can improvise. If you have a window where the sun shines in, place a table in front of that window and set up your vegetable garden right there.

Assemble the necessary materials

You will need vases, planters or containers, substrate for planting, expanded clay to place under the vases and seedlings. “For those just starting out, I recommend using ready-made seedlings, to avoid frustration”, says Alessandra.

Remember: if you choose to make a vertical garden, do not use ceramic pots, as they are heavier. Look for options like plastic vases.

Garden care

The main care you should have with your garden are irrigation and fertilization. “O The best way to know if the plant needs water is to put your finger in the soil. If it comes out soaked and full of mud, it has a lot of water, and if it comes out dry, it needs water”, explains Alessandra.

According to the specialist, it is important to irrigate your garden at least once a day, and cover fertilization should be done every 15 days.

Do not forget that the soil must always be covered with dry organic matter, such as straw and pruning remains. By covering the soil, there is a guarantee of conservation of moisture and micro-life present in it.
