As soon as you hear the request “Mom, can I have a pet?”, do you get goosebumps just thinking about the routine of having to pick up poop in the backyard? Know that living with an animal helps in the development of children. But those who don’t want too much change in the domestic routine can think about getting a little fish. The aquarium is practical, economical, relieves stress and even decorates the environment.

Below we give you the best tips for taking good care of them.

Necessary materials

1 container: must be glass.

1 thermostat: the object regulates the temperature of the water.

1 filter: ensures that the water is always circulating.

1 antichlorine: removes chlorine and protects the scales.

1 lamp for lighting: serves to simulate day and night.

How to maintain the aquarium

Hygiene: cleaning is required at least once a week. Mentally divide the aquarium into four parts and take one of these parts (a quarter) out of the water. Then put the same amount of water, filtered and already with antichlorine. Repeat the operation three times, until all the contents of the aquarium are renewed.

Light: lighting should be as natural as possible. Place it on top of the aquarium and leave it on for up to 8 hours.

Meals: the fish feed, which must be specific to each species, must be given twice a day – in the morning and in the evening. Do not overdo the amount.

This species is different from all others. “They breathe on the surface, do not accept companions, eat less and are more resistant to cold water”, explains Esteves. So, if your routine is full of commitments, this is the ideal animal for your home.

For the fish to adapt to the new home

Research well in advance about the species you want to buy. Study what are your main characteristics, needs and your eating habits. “Set up the aquarium before putting in the fish. Fill it with water, put the filter to work and leave a week without the future resident. In this way, the environment is suitable for the animal to live in”, advises Marcelo Esteves, a biologist at the EcoMarine store.
