Followers of the Hare Krishna philosophy are known for repeating tirelessly and with contagious joy, alone or in groups, the maha-mantra – great mantra – Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare… According to the teachings of AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896-1977), founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, this is a direct channel to the Almighty. Hare is an invocation to divine energy, as the word Krishna means the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Rama, in turn, is another name for God, which means “the reservoir of pleasure, bliss, eternal happiness.” While chanting, the person must mentalize the following prayer: “O Lord All-Attractive! O energy of the Lord! Please occupy me in Your service!”. Followers believe that chanting the maha-mantra is the simplest and most enjoyable process for connecting with God, freeing the mind from earthly afflictions – fears, anguish, attachments.

Initiates use the japa-mala, a Hindu rosary composed of 108 wooden beads. They undertake to “walk” a minimum of 16 rounds daily, which corresponds to chanting Hare Krishna 1728 times a day. The task takes about two hours. However, anyone can speak out. It is recommended that those curious complete at least one lap, a task that takes six minutes – just to feel the taste.

meditation step by step

· Sit in the lotus position with your spine straight or, if you prefer, walk somewhere quiet. If you’re in busy spots, practice is welcome, but delivery won’t be the same.

· The intonation of the maha-mantra (Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare) should preferably be audible, but not so loud as to disturb anyone around near.

· Complete at least one turn of the japa-mala, the Hindu rosary, which will take about six minutes.

· Try to meditate early (philosophy suggests two hours before sunrise, ideally, because during this period the mind is naturally calm and the surroundings are quiet). However, it is better to fit the practice in some window throughout the day than to avoid it due to the lack of a biological clock compatible with dawn.
