Poetry is linked to both love and misfortune: the poet only suggests a vehicle through which to travel. The verses are his, but the love and pain are our property, since to feel pleasure when reading the best poetry we must contribute something fundamental: experience. And so we can suffer, love and hate through a poem, only if we have suffered, loved and hated in our own life. Complete happiness annuls poetry, as well as any other expression of art; and it can even be said that, without misfortune, there would be no poetry; and even more so, there would be no life.

Let us then let the poets sing our suffering, tell us the forms of our love and our sorrow; May they use our memories to give us back a purer, less earthly sadness, stripped of daily miseries; a sadness that justifies our tears on those pale afternoons that poetry has given us.
