History of the Saint

São Roque was born in 1295, in France, to a wealthy family. At the time, everyone was surprised because of a mark on his chest: a red cross. He was educated entirely within Christian precepts, until, at the age of 20, he was orphaned of both father and mother, inheriting an enormous fortune.

Wanting to follow Jesus’ footsteps on Earth and his humility, the Saint decided to divide his inheritance into two parts: one for the poor and another for an uncle. So he left for Rome and, on his pilgrimage, provided help to the needy, especially the seriously ill.

After years, when returning to his hometown, he was attacked by the plague and took refuge in a forest to avoid passing the disease on to other people. While waiting for death, a dog found him and began to bring him bread. The owner of the animal, noticing the absence with which the dog left, followed him and found the Saint. Some time later, São Roque was cured of the disease and went to a city in Italy.

Arriving in Tuscany, he saw a great mortality caused by the plague. There, he helped many people afflicted with the disease, sometimes curing them only with the sign of the cross. His gift gained notoriety throughout the region.

Upon returning to Montepellier, his homeland, he was not recognized and he was arrested. They thought he was a spy disguised as a pilgrim, as there was a civil war going on. Even when placed before the governor, who was his uncle, he was not remembered and ended up going to prison.

After five years, on August 16, São Roque died forgotten in his cell. The jailer, who had been lame from birth, was cured by touching St. Roque’s body with his foot, to see if he had really died. When they took off his clothes to bury him, the man of faith was recognized because of the cross marked on his chest.
