For 49% of young people, cell phones are “best friends”

Motorola released a survey that shows, in numbers, the relationship between Generation Z with your smartphones🇧🇷 The research, carried out jointly with a professor at Harvard University, shows that 49% of Brazilian users of generation Z (16 to 20 years old) consider the smartphone “their best friend”.

The study is part of the Phone Life Balance project, which encourages smart and balanced smartphone use. 4,418 users aged between 16 and 65 years from four countries (Brazil, France, United States and India) were interviewed.

Overall, 33% of respondents prioritize their cell phone over spending time with friends, family or significant others. This number increases in Brazil, with 36% of respondents having this opinion, behind India (47%), followed by the United States (30%) and France, last (18%).

The research was done in partnership with Dr. Nancy Etcoff, an expert in Mind-Brain Behavior and the Science of Happiness at Harvard University and a psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The participants also demonstrated that they recognize the need for a balance when it comes to cell phone use: 61% of them agree that they want to make the most of the device while using it and, at the same time, want to enjoy life without it.

As much as the number is the same for Brazilians, 60% of participants say that it is important to have a life separated from the cell phone and, in Brazil, this number drops to 48%.

The research also showed the three main cell phone behaviors that impact interpersonal relationships. The first is compulsive checking, when you check your cell phone more often than you would like (the percentage was 49%, that is, almost six people out of ten). 44% of people feel compelled to constantly check their phone.

Another behavior is excessive time on the cell phone. A third of respondents (or 35%) agree that they spend too much time using their smartphone (44% of Gen Z) and believe that they would be happier if they spent less time on their cell phone (34%). With Brazilians, the numbers are 33%, 38% and 30%, respectively.

The last of the three behaviors is emotional overdependence, when people panic when they think they’ve lost their cell phone. Two-thirds of people feel this way, or 65% (approximately three out of four). Three out of ten people interviewed (29%) agree that when they are not using their cell phone, they are thinking about using it or planning their next use.

Losing a cell phone concerns 56% of Brazilian respondents, 69% of Gen Z and 68% of Millennials.
