Find out which countries people sleep the longest in

You may already know that the necessary sleep time to maintain health is about 8 hours a night. But a survey by the US National Sleep Foundation that brought together about 20 researchers and took about 2 years to complete showed, in detail, how much sleep time is needed at each age — you can access the table here. For people between 18 and 64 years old, for example, 7 to 9 hours a night are needed. This has, of course, a huge positive impact from the point of view of health and productivity at work, in studies and in household chores.

But, as you might imagine, not everyone gets the prescribed amount of sleep. And it also varies from country to country. Studies published in the famous magazine The Economist, based on the Sleep Cycle app, show that there are big differences in the average amount of sleep people have in different countries.

At the other end of the table is Saudi Arabia: 5 hours and 48 minutes of sleep, on average. Next, with a little more than 6 hours of sleep a day, come the Japanese and South Koreans. Even though they are countries with a high level of income, Japan and South Korea seem to prioritize work over having a little more sleep. But its closest neighbors (in The Economist’s chart, not geographically), Malaysia, Egypt and the Philippines all get half an hour more sleep on average.

An important question to evaluate is the number of cycles of REM sleep (acronym for Rapid Eye Movement, since, even closed, the eyes move very frequently in this stage) and non-REM during sleep. To be in good health, say the researchers, one would need to have at least 5 cycles of these two types of sleep alternately. Each cycle lasts about 90 minutes. With more sleep, of course, it is possible to have more cycles. And, of course, the New Zealanders, the leaders of the survey, end up having an advantage over the Saudis, the lanterninhas — and everyone else.

An interesting data raised by the research is that, considering global datamen sleep, on average, about 20 minutes less than women. And they move more in bed, which may indicate poor quality sleep.

The most early risers, according to the survey, are Guatemalans, who fall out of bed around 6:07 am. The Greeks are usually the most resistant to lifting. They get up around 8:53 am, according to research by The Economist.

On the other hand, research shows that South Africans tend to go to sleep, on average, around 11:01 pm and Lebanese go to sleep after midnight to 1:17 am.
