Discover the different types of fragrances

Most women don’t leave the house without a good perfume. But, after all, what is a “good perfume”? How to choose the ideal fragrance for you?

To make a good choice, it is essential to understand that there are different types of fragrances for sale in the market. And knowing the main differences between them – their advantages and disadvantages – is an important point.

Alessandra Tucci, perfume specialist and founding partner of Perfumaria Paralela (which holds the exclusive license of the Cinquième Sens French Perfumery School in Brazil), explains that, as in the fashion, makeup, gastronomy world, the diversity of perfumes seeks to serve different consumers. – who have their own distinct preferences and tastes.

“What defines a perfume is its personality, what it is composed of: if it is a cheerful, light, youthful and fresh perfume, for example, it will be made with ingredients that come from the gardens, such as flowers and fruits; it can still be mysterious, dark, deep, and made of ingredients such as smoked wood, incense, vanilla, saffron”, exemplifies Alessandra. “There are a multitude of perfume shades,” she adds.

EDT X EDP X EDC

You’ve probably noticed on a perfume the saying “eau de toilette” or “eau de parfum” and you may have been a little confused about what it means.

The names EDT (eau de toilette), EDC (eau de cologne) and EDP (eau de parfum), which are the most popular nowadays, in the fragrance universe, serve to define concentration rates of the main compound – the perfume itself – in a solvent. In this way, it is known what concentration of pure perfume was dissolved in this solution.

It is worth mentioning that, in terms of quality, the nomenclatures make no difference. The sophistication of a fragrance depends much more on the perfect balance between aromas (notes and chords). But, of course, it’s the concentration of a fragrance’s perfume extract that will determine its longevity on the skin.

Below, perfume expert Alessandra explains the differences between EDT, EDP and EDC:

EDC: is the eau de cologne, similar to the eau fraiche. “It has a dosage of around 2% and its duration on the skin reaches up to 4 hours. It should be used in abundance and reapplied several times throughout the day. The price is more affordable, but, as it is widely used, it ends faster”, highlights Alessandra.

EDT: it is eau de toilette or cologne deodorant in Brazil. “It is a perfume that contains 10% to 14% of fragrance dissolved in alcohol and lasts for around 6 to 8 hours. It’s a ‘just right’ perfume, so it doesn’t have any disadvantages”, highlights Alessandra Tucci.

EDP: is the eau de parfum. “It is a perfume that contains 15% to 17% of fragrance dissolved in alcohol and lasts for around 10 hours. Of greater durability, it usually has a higher price than EDT”, explains the specialist. Because it is more concentrated, it should be applied in a small dose.

Tips for choosing the right fragrance for you

Alessandra Tucci explains that there is no magic formula to choose a perfume, but that some tips can help.

Below you can find expert advice and simple tips on how to make a good choice:

  • First, think about you, “what suits you, because choosing a perfume is very personal and we shouldn’t rely on other people”, explains specialist Alessandra. “Think about the types of perfumes you’ve used, your style, in short, what types of perfumes you like and don’t like,” she adds.
  • Just because a certain perfume is becoming more popular on the market and all your friends have already bought it doesn’t mean you need to buy it. It is essential to be authentic in this type of choice.
  • Alessandra Tucci emphasizes that it is essential to taste several perfumes on the tape and choose up to three to feel on the skin and follow its evolution. “Be careful, don’t buy perfume on impulse! It is very important to follow the evolution of a fragrance, it will never be the same from application to the end of its duration. That’s why there are top, body and bottom notes. The outgoing ones are characterized by the first impact of a perfume; the body ones are the personality and the background ones, the duration”, explains the specialist.
  • Regarding the types of fragrances, EDT is a great option for all types of women: its duration is 6 to 8 hours. And the cost is usually lower compared to the price of EDP fragrances.
  • EDP is the best option for people who want the fragrance to last longer. Lasting approximately 10 hours, it can be passed, for example, in the morning at 8 am and will probably last until late afternoon, 18 hours.
  • EDP is an option for people who love perfumes and, therefore, have no problem spending a little more on it.
  • EDC usually has a more affordable price, so it is a good option for those who like to have several types of perfumes (with different scents) at home.
  • People who don’t have much time and/or forget to reapply perfume throughout the day should avoid EDC fragrances (which last a maximum of 4 hours).
