Create a powerful witch altar with these 7 top tips Welcome to Wicca now

Hello my dears and welcome to Wiccanow. Recently I’ve been all over the show covering everything from lavender to a botanical witchcraft to a healing spell and also my top indoor magical plants to promote healing. Today I want to veer in another direction and talk about something I haven’t covered that I probably should have, which is how to set up your witch altar!

Learn all about the best ways to set up your witch altar below!

As I mention all along, how you want to set things like set your witch altar is entirely up to you. There are some guidelines I’ll outline below as many people like to set things up, but just because most people do it one way definitely doesn’t mean you have to follow suit.

Altars are a very personal thing and each of us will set them up differently. Some people love to have an elaborate altar in a prominent place in their home, others prefer a simpler and more understated version somewhere out of the way. Because your witch’s altar is so personal, choose what you’re more comfortable with. I would suggest just starting out and then adding to your altar when it feels right.

My 7 top tips for setting up your witch altar

So, let’s get started! Here’s my guide to setting up your witch altar.

Witch Altar Tip #1 Find out what is important to you

Your altar is a personal space that celebrates and symbolizes your spirituality. It is where you place your hopes and dreams and set intentions for the magic work you may perform.

Here it is important to find out what is really most important to you and your life. What are your future plans? Why do you want an altar? What energy do you want to channel? Why are you drawn to witchcraft? Do you honor a deity? Are the cycles in nature important to you? These are all good questions to answer before setting up your witch’s altar.

Witch Altar Tip #2 Choose your location

When choosing a place for your altar, think about how often you will use it and how much space you want to devote to it. Some people will have an entire sanctuary (I don’t know many people who have that much space, but that’s really beside the point) and others will have a very small space in the corner of their desks. Both are perfectly fine and you need to decide how much space you need to save.

When choosing a place to place your altar, be careful not to get in the way of other people you live with. Maybe you have roommates at home and the dining table may not be the most suitable place to put it. Maybe you have kids and this lower end table might be close to inquisitive little hands. Maybe your cat (that’s me) is a little less graceful than she might like and likes to jump on things only to fall back down and dump it all on the ground. What I’m saying is choose a suitable spot that won’t disturb the other creatures you live with.

Is the bathroom your happy place? Set up your witches’ altar there if that’s where you feel like your best self.

When considering the location of your altar, it’s also nice to consider how good the energy feels in that space. I tend to have morning sun in my apartment and I have set up my altar to make the most of it. I love that it is bathed in natural light every morning and I feel like this gives my altar a very special energy. Perhaps you have a favorite plant that you would like to incorporate? Or a favorite window? A favorite room? Your altar should be a space that feels special to you. Choose your location accordingly.

Witchy Altar Tip #3 Direction of your altar

Did you know that many people choose to face their altars north? If you’re curious as to why this is, let me explain.

The 4 directions on a compass have a corresponding natural element that they represent.

Elements and their corresponding directions

)

North Earth South Fire East Air West Water

  • Because Wicca is an earth-based religion (and I’m coming from a Wicca perspective), many of them choose to have altars facin g north.

This is absolutely not something you have to follow, but you can choose which direction you want your altar to go, although it’s not a set direction at all. Perhaps one of the elements speaks to you more than the others, or you value them all and rotate your altar every 3 months. Decide what is important to you and deal with it. Test different alignments and see which one works best for you.

Witch Altar Tip #4 Altar Decorations

This is so big that I’m going to write a separate post on all the things you can add to your witch altar and the reasons why you might add them. Check out my fun altar decorations here.

In the meantime, here’s a small selection of things you might want to include. Again, choose things that you love and that give you good energy and raise your vibrations.

  • Salt – keeps malicious intent away (see this post for my salt banning recipe).
  • Water – It is great to represent the 4 main elements.

  • Favorite plant – this represents the earth in the 4 elements. Candles – I actually use one candle to represent air (fire cannot burn without oxygen) and one to represent fire. This is how I cover my 4 elements.
  • Anthame – to give you energy.
  • God and Goddess figurines – this can be whoever you want to worship. It can be just one, both, many, or none depending on what you believe. If you don’t identify with it, that’s totally fine too!

    Possible witch altar layout

This is a common way of framing an altar.

  • Witchy Altar Tip #5 Free up space

For me it is really important to leave a little free space on your altar. I know it’s really tempting to fill it up with everything you love, and realistically you’ll find more and more things to add over time (if you’re like me and love flea markets). That being said, everything needs some air to breathe. Think about how you feel when you are in a room full of way too many things. It’s suffocating! Your altar feels the same way. Make sure you only add things that are relevant to you NOW.

Everything needs a bit of space to grow to its full potential.

Adding too much clutter can make this weird mush of energetic energy that doesn’t quite know what it’s doing. Too many things contain too many ideas and the whole is confused. Again, this is just my opinion. So if you love many things, then go for it!

    Witchy Altar Tip #6 Crystals

While this falls under altar decoration, it can be an important addition to your altar. Crystals have a lot of power within them. So if you’re going to add them to your witch’s altar, make sure you know what kind of energy they bring before adding them to the altar.

I really like adding crystals to my altar and depending on how I’m feeling or what spell or ritual I want to perform, I’ll change what’s on my altar. Amythest has made a few posts on different crystals and their properties. Check out her posts on Amethyst, Sodalite, Emerald, Rose Quartz and Peridot.

You can create a crystal grid on your altar if you want to channel something specific.

    Witchy Altar Tip #7 Enjoy!

As you create an altar, you can feel heavily laden and full of opportunities to “mess up”. Remember that we are not talking about life or death. This is something that should bring you joy and make you feel good.

An altar serves to improve your craft, not make you guilty, or beat you with a set of rules that you must follow. A witch’s path is winding, and what you liked yesterday may not please you tomorrow. Keep this in mind as you create your altar and don’t focus on how you might be doing something “wrong”. Unless you are a ceremonial or overly traditional witch, you have the freedom in the world to create an altar that brings you joy.

Do you love plants? Make a plant altar with herbs, cacti, flowers and whatever you love the most. enjoy crystal more? Cover all your bases with crystals corresponding to each of the 4 elements. Do you like to cook? Make your kitchen your altar and your kitchen knife your ceremonial knife.

Make your witch altar on a shelf in your kitchen. That’s where mine is sometimes…

Dear ones, whatever you do on this path, do it yourself! I’m here to give you suggestions and tips, but I never feel like you have to follow anything said here 100%. Being a witch is about claiming your own power, and if you have different ideas than I do, embrace them!

You are all forces to be reckoned with, never forget it.

Bless you and see you next time
