Conference call: 11 tips to do well in a remote work meeting

“I’ve been working for a week in a multinational company and my boss asked me to participate in a conference call with some managers from other countries. Are there any rules of etiquette I should follow in these remote meetings?”

There are some, all linked to common sense and minimal knowledge of good communication in a group, especially if you are dealing with people you don’t know, of different nationalities and that you are not seeing. Here is a list of good ways that can help you:

1) As conferences only start when all participants join the call, you must enter, identify yourself and wait, preferably in silence, until everyone is present.

2) Every call has a leader. He must make the introduction. If you are the leader, wait for the full quorum to do so.

3) If you are a guest, be prepared for the topic of the meeting and only speak up when it is your turn or when someone asks you something. Staying mute is much better than talking nonsense.

4) If you’re at home, take care of the sound around you: the barking of the dog, the blender or other household noises can be embarrassing in a formal call.

5) Know the names of the participants. Take notes.

6) If you are invited to give your opinion or opinion, keep it brief.

7) Don’t interrupt anyone who is speaking, even if you think they are talking nonsense.

8) When the call gets boring (which isn’t difficult), don’t distract yourself from the conversation with games or patience: you may be invited to give your opinion and you shouldn’t lose the thread or pose.

9) Unless someone tells a soooo funny joke, avoid laughing at any comment.

10) Avoid making any jokes. Even if it’s really funny.

11) If you are the leader of the call, make sure it is brief. If you are a participant, heroically endure to the end.
