How to Cast a Ritual Circle for Protection

During every spell casting ritual, you should be casting a magic or protection circle to define what your own sacred space will be, and within which you will perform the ritual. In addition, creating this sacred space will serve as a means of keeping the energies that we will generate and work with during the execution of the ritual. This way, and as a means of protection, the energies outside the circle cannot affect us during the ritual.

Casting a ritual circle for protection during spell casting

Casting the magic circle becomes essential not only when we are going to perform a ritual, but also when we are going to consecrate our witchcraft tools. Being this a sacred space and clean of negative energies, only the energy that we are going to generate will pass on to our tools, and to our spells.

The protection circle is usually drawn with the athame, a Wiccan ceremonial dagger. But every sorcerer or witch will use the tool they feel the most comfortable with. I personally like to use my magic wand, which is nothing more than a sprig of hazelnut, but if you do not have access to a hazelnut branch and you do not have an athame you can use a sprig of laurel, a burning incense stick, or even your own dominant finger.

The magic circle is your intimate space of work, power and protection that you can even use to sit and meditate, although for the latter its casting would not be as elaborate as for a ritual or for consecrations.

Before casting the magic circle

Before you cast your sacred space of work, it is imperative that you clean it. Personally I like to use ammonia, vinegar and salt to clean floors, tables, doors and window frames. Then we will choose a perfume such as a cleansing herb like sage or rosemary and we burn it to purify the air.

Once you have cleaned the workspace, you must fix your altar and put on it everything you will need because once you cast the circle you will not be able to leave it until the ritual is finished and you open it.

To give you an idea of what the circle is, visually speaking it is like a dome that covers not only the top but also the bottom, it is like being inside a huge egg that covers the space but also the earth under you.

Before casting it, you must stop to meditate for a few moments and be able to see your inner flame, your being, your spirit and visualize how that light extends and covers our inner self. Then, we are going to root ourselves with the earth as if we were a tree and unfold our roots to the center of the earth and its core. This energy will flood us and give us strength. Imagine it ascending by your spine and going out through your crown, projecting to the universe and connecting with the energy of the God and Goddess, the original cause of the universe, which will come back to us flooding with all its vital energy.

Once we have in our being the forces of the earth and the God and Goddess together, we will project it outside of us as a shield forming with its light the protective dome that we need.

When we begin the physical casting of the circle we must take into account the direction of the sun, in the northern hemisphere we will trace it clockwise. In the southern hemisphere it will be the opposite, counterclockwise.

What you will need

  • 1 red candle (the Fire element)
  • 2 white candles for the God and Goddess
  • 1 white candle to represent the Akasha or the deity. (These candles can be reused in other rituals)
  • 1 glass of water
  • 1 incense stick

Casting the magic circle

There are many prayers you can use, and with practice you can design your own prayers that are the most attuned to yourself because in essence you have to feel, live and vibrate with what you do and say, because that will give you the power. Here’s an example of what you can do. In any Wiccan magick book or in the Witches Bible you can find clear examples that you can use.

You move eastwards and go clockwise (this is in the northern hemisphere) until you end up again in the east with your hand extended with your athame, or wand, or just your index finger of your dominant hand and You say:

“By my will and the will of the Father God and the Mother Goddess,
I conjure you circle of power,
To be my sacred space beyond time and space,
Of men and of spirits.
I conjure you to be my protector
And hold the power of the energies that I will form within
Until you decide to release it.
That’s why I bless you and I consecrate you. “

Once you do this you return to the center of the circle and say:

“This is a time that is not time
And a space that is not space.
I stand before the threshold between two worlds.
May the ancients protect me
And guide me in my magic ritual. “

This is the first stroke of the circle, it must be done three times, the next two will be the drawing of the circle with water and salt and then with fire and air. For this we must first bless the elements.
Let’s light a white candle that will represent the being, Akasha, the Spirit. It will represent the sacred fire on our altar.

We will place the glass with water in the pentacle and we will touch it with the tip of the athame or the magic wand and we will bless it:

“In the name of the Father God and the Mother Goddess
I bless this water.
Let there be no evil or impurity in it,
Therefore I bless and consecrate it. “

Remove the glass of water and put the bowl with the salt in the pentacle and repeat the blessing.

“In the name of the Father God and the Mother Goddess
I bless this salt. Let there be no evil in it and
Purify everything you touch.
Therefore I bless and consecrate it. “

Now we are going to take three pinches of salt with the fingers and we will throw them in the glass of water. We are going to move it three times in clockwise direction with the athame or the wand and we proceed to draw the circle with the water and the salt again, saying while we cast it:

“With this water and salt, elements of water and earth, I draw this sacred circle so that it is worthy to receive the Mother Goddess and the Father God so that everything that has not been called to it, will be banished. That only love can enter this circle and only love can come out of it, so I can fulfill the purpose of this ritual.”

Now we are going to proceed to bless the fire with the red candle. Place it in the pentacle and bless it in the same way that we have done previously placing the tip of the athame on it:

“In the name of God and the Goddess
I bless this fire. Let there be no evil in it,
From now on it is sacred fire and
Therefore I bless and consecrate it. “

Finally we are going to bless the air so we are going to put the incense on the pentacle and proceed to bless it:

“In the name of the Father God and the Mother Goddess
I bless this incense that represents the air,
That there be no evil in him,
Therefore I bless and consecrate it. “

And now we can proceed to cast the circle again with fire and air saying:

“With this incense, elements fire and air, I draw this sacred circle so that it is worthy to receive the Mother Goddess and the Father God so that everything that has not been called to it will be banished. That only love can enter this circle and only love can come out of it, so I can fulfill the purpose of this ritual.”

We call on the Elemental Guardians

Now we proceed to summon the elementary Guardians to protect the circle, bless it and protect it and also endow it with its qualities.

We start on the East and continue as we have done before.

“We call upon the elementary guardians of the East, lords of the air, to bless and protect this circle and carry it with their powers. They are welcome.
We call upon the elementary guardians of the South, lords of fire, to bless and protect this circle and carry it with their powers. They are welcome.
We call upon the elementary guardians of the West, lords of water, to bless and protect this circle and carry it with their powers. They are welcome.
We call upon the elementary guardians of the North, lords of the earth, to bless and protect this circle and carry it with their powers. They are welcome.”

Inviting the God and Goddess into the Circle

Finally, we will invite the Mother Goddess in the first place and her candle will be to the left of the altar and then the Father God and his candle will be on the right side of the altar.

So that this part does not conflict with the personal beliefs of each one, each one can summon their deity of preference, it can be mother moon and the father sun, Jesus Christ, and the Virgin Mary, etc. The important thing is to have a clear mental image of the deity that we are going to call and must memorize, or have the invocations at hand.

The invitation might look something likethis:

“Blessed Goddess, Lady and Mother, I welcome you to my circle to witness my ritual and with your love and power to protect it.
Blessed God, Lord and Father, I welcome you to my circle to witness my ritual and to protect you with your love and power.”

Now, step in the center of the circle and say:

“This circle is sealed with the power bestowed upon it by the Mother Goddess, the Father God, and the Elemental Guardians. May they guide me and protect me.”

At this point, we can begin with our ritual, whatever it is that we are going to perform.
Once we have finished the ritual, consecrations or what we have decided to do, we need to get rid of the energies that have been generated in our interior and for this we place the soles of the feet and hands on the floor and visualize that all the surplus energy is sent to Mother Earth for her reintegration.

Wiccan five elements

Wiccan five elementsOnce this is done, it is time to open the circle.

Opening the Circle.

At this moment we are going to dismiss the Mother Goddess and the Father God:

“Blessed Goddess, Lady, and Mother, I thank you for blessing this ritual with your presence. Happy departure and happy reunion.” (We extinguish the candle of the Goddess)
Blessed God, Lord and Father, I thank you for blessing this ritual with your presence. Happy departure and happy reunion.” (We extinguish the candle of God)”

Farewell to the Elemental Guardians:

“Elemental Guardians of the East, lords of the air, I thank you for having blessed this circle and ritual with your presence and granted your protection. They leave in peace. So be it.
Elementary guardians of the South, lords of fire, I thank you for having blessed this circle and ritual with your presence and granted your protection. They leave in peace. So be it.
Elemental guardians of the West, gentlemen of the water, I thank that they have blessed with their presence this circle and ritual and granted its protection. They leave in peace. So be it.
Elemental guardians of the North, gentlemen of the earth, I thank that they have blessed with their presence this circle and ritual and granted its protection. They leave in peace. So be it.”

We extinguished the candles of the Akasha and the red one of the element fire.

Now it is time to open the circle. Step in the East and move counterclockwise and as we do so, we say:

“The circle has been opened but never broken. Happy departure and happy reunion. So be it.”
