Choose the toy according to the age of the children

Child loves a toy, and that’s really good! By handling it, the little ones discover the world around them. “Toys promote children’s cognitive, emotional, corporal and creative development”, says Adriana Friedmann, author of the book The Art of Playing (Editora Vozes, R$ 46*). In addition, dolls, cars and the like are a way for us to get to know our children better. “Observing how children play, adults can discover their potential, interests, needs and abilities”, he says. But in the face of so many options, the question always arises at the time of purchase: which is the most suitable? Child psychologist Rafael Alvarenga, author of the book My first class day (Editora Volta e Meia, R$ 21*), recalls that suitable toys generate fun and help in the development of the child. Respect the age group

In Brazil, it is mandatory that all toys bring an indication of age. This is usually in a visible place on the packaging. This information is very important and should always be taken into account. “An unsuitable toy can lead to frustration, as the child will not be able to play. The feeling will be of defeat”, warns Alvarenga. In addition, this indication ensures that the toy is safe, not having, for example, small parts that can be swallowed. Always look for the Inmetro seal. Only he guarantees that there are no toxic or hazardous materials.

Up to 1 year

Toys need to be soft and should stimulate the senses. It’s important to avoid loud sounds so you don’t shake the little one too much. The presence of an adult during the game is essential.

Prefer: mobiles, fabric carts, teethers, objects with different textures, activity mats, bath books.

From 1 to 3 years old

Children enter a phase where they like to imitate grown-ups. They are also attentive to sounds and love music. The presence of an adult remains essential.

Prefer: musical instruments, cliques, books with large and colorful pictures, building blocks, push toys, fitting games, large dolls.

From 3 to 5 years

Toys play the role of children’s companions. It’s time to give the little ones something that stimulates memory, reasoning, creativity and motor coordination.

Prefer: dolls, cars, objects for make-believe, such as costumes; coloring books, colored pencils, crayons, paints, play dough, balls, puzzles, building blocks.

From 5 to 7 years

In this age group, little ones are more attentive and like to play with other people. They are already interested in electronics.

Prefer: board games, puppets, books with short texts, blocks with letters (to stimulate literacy), puzzles, paints, colored pencils. Video games can also, but with controlled time and content, agreed?

From 7 to 10 years

It’s time for challenges. Children already have the capacity for games that require reasoning and strategy. Also bet on toys that help expend energy and move the body. Encourage the kids to play outside, in parks or at the club.

Prefer: board games, bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, profession kits, kites, science games.

From 10 to 12 years old

At this stage, electronics dominate the attention of the little ones. It is up to adults to encourage them to also explore outdoor activities and play sports. Teaching them to play a musical instrument is a great idea.

Prefer: construction objects (like advanced building blocks), video games, magic kit, skateboard, balls, skates, guitar, guitar.
