How some childhood drawings have changed over time

Almost every adult has a “cartoon from the heart”, the one they watched as a child. Many of these drawings, of course, were just a memory, with only a few seasons. But there are others that are broadcast to this day on TV and with new episodes. And although they have changed, it’s always a good idea to watch them again, to feel like a kid again. Today, on children’s channels, classics coexist with new productions. That’s why, at the end of this post, we prepared a bonus comparing the old drawings with those that are currently a real sensation among the little ones.

O awesome.club wants to show how the cartoons of our childhood have evolved over the years and what the new generation looks like.

1. Sponge Bob

The fun and friendly sponge has been with us since 1997 and has changed a lot throughout her “career”. In the beginning, the designs were made by hand and their colors were darker. Over time, the animated series was modernized with the use of new technologies. In the ninth season, the image quality became sharper and clearer, as it started to be done on the computer. In the 2015 film, 3D details were added. The famous cartoon continues to be broadcast and we are waiting for its 13th season.

two. the simpsons

In 1987, the iconic Springfield family was still just a two-minute vignette featured on The Tracey Ullman Show. But the huge success made it take on a “life of its own”. At first, the characters and settings were quite simple, with uneven lines and unusual proportions. Shortly after, these details were modified, until they gained the form we know today. Also in the beginning, the drawings were made by hand and painted in a computerized way, but in 2010 the entire production started to be digitized, changing the process of editing the episodes.

As for the stories themselves, the various changes of writers made the plot constantly change. In the beginning, we saw more real and day-to-day situations. Then, crazy and even surreal situations arose. Although for some fans the simpsons may have lost their charm a long time ago, the series remains a hit with the audience and now has 31 seasons.

3. The Powerpuff Girls

The superpowered little sisters who fight to save their city from monsters and strange creatures were created over 20 years ago. The series is produced by Cartoon Network. The show ran for six seasons until 2004, when it stopped airing. There was a reboot (“restart”) in 2016, but which was not very well received by the public. The drawings were different and had a better quality, but the plot did not convince the fans. Recently, the producers announced that there will be a live actionthis time with the adult sisters and that promises not to disappoint.

4. Scooby Doo

If there is a cartoon that has been part of all generations, it is the Scooby Doo. The story has been showing the talking dog and his group of friends solving mysteries since 1969. In all, there are 13 adaptations. The last one, called Scooby-Doo and Guests, started last year and is still on the air. Over the years, the drawings have changed significantly, going through different types of strokes and presenting a better quality image.

5. The Teen Titans

The DC Comics superheroes had their first animated adaptation in 2003, on the Cartoon Network screen. The cartoon had five seasons until 2005 and, in 2013, the characters returned renewed and with a new look in Teen Titans Go! In the first series, they had the appearance of comic book characters and the plot revolved around the exploits performed by the group to save the city. But in the second version they were drawn in the format chibi🇧🇷 a type of drawing characteristic of Japanese anime. The plot has become a little more childish since launch.

6. The Winx Club

The Italian series shows the life of a group of teenagers who have magical powers and live several adventures while learning to use the magic of fairies. The story was released in 2004 and, since then, it continues to be broadcast and already has eight seasons. But over the years, the designs have changed, and not only has the image quality improved, but the characters have acquired characteristics closer to Japanese anime.

7. Tom and Jerry

8. Looney Tunes

Another animation classic. The Looney Tunes are true icons of the cartoon world, since their creation dates back to the year 1930. At that time, Warner Bros. wanted to make a series of musical shorts (there was a huge focus on the music that accompanied the animations). Since then, different characters and stories have emerged. The “franchise” has movies, a game and several versions of the characters. The last one, called Looney Tunes Cartoons, was released this year.

9. The Fairly OddParents

We met the boy in the pink cap and his two fairy godparents in 1998, thanks to Nickelodeon. The series has ten seasons and, although no more episodes are produced, it was one of the longest on the channel and is aired to this day. The changes in the drawings were not just physical (in the ninth season it moved to the high definition format and widescreen), but also in the story, as new characters began to be part of Timmy, Cosmo and Wanda’s lives, such as Poof, the son of wizards.

10. pokemon

Although Pokémon is a franchise that goes beyond television, since 1997 we can see Ash Ketchum on screen along with his faithful companion Pikachu and his group of friends training little monsters, to become Pokémon Masters. The animated video game series has 23 seasons, the last of which was released in 2019. In this new version, the drawings have taken on another aspect and the story revolves around the beginning of the protagonist’s adventures. Another character, called Go, was even incorporated.

Bonus: Comparisons between the drawings of yesteryear and those of today

Sponge Bob vs. toon marty

The Simpson vs. The Big Houses

In this 2019 drawing, we meet Santiago / Casagrande, a family of Latin descent, living in the United States. The two stories show what life is like for different families in the same country, but with the cultural differences that characterize them.

At Super powerful girls vs. Miraculous: The Adventures of Ladybug

Of course, the main similarity is the existence, in both cartoons, of people with super powers. This is what the heroine sisters have shown for years and this is what, since 2015, Ladybug and Cat Noir, characters from the miraculous🇧🇷 have been showing.

Scooby Doo vs. PAW Patrol

Dogs are many people’s favorite characters and always win the hearts of the audience. Scooby-Doo did it, as did the PAW Patrol with younger kids.

The Teen Titans vs. Operation Big Hero: The Series

The series emerged from the movie Operation Big Hero.🇧🇷 which shows Hiro Hamada, his robot Baymax and his group trying to save the city. The characters resemble the Teen Titans, but are immersed in the world of technology. How modern!

The Winx Club vs. Dorg Van Dango

Groups of friends with magical powers are a recurring theme in the cartoon world. In Dorg Van Dango, the main character meets a group of very different subjects. Mythological and fantasy creatures are present in both series, which feature teenagers as protagonists.

Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry vs. breadwinners

Many cartoons have animals that talk and live thousands of adventures. And the characters mentioned earlier in this post are not the only ones. After all, this is another frequent theme in the animation universe. A slightly more modern example is Breadwinners🇧🇷 a couple of duck friends, who live and play with other creatures.

the fairy godparents vs. Rainbow butterfly unicorn kitty

Magic has always been a cartoon theme. This can be seen in the recent version of this Nickelodeon series, whose protagonist is a cat who is a mixture of a unicorn and a butterfly and who possesses the powers of these three creatures.

pokemon vs. Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia

What did you think of the changes to the animations? What was your favorite childhood cartoon or TV show?
