“Don’t look at chicory with a disgusted face.” “Let’s try the food willingly.” These phrases are commonplace in the food education plan proposed by Rio de Janeiro nutritionist Tania Bottino. She believes that speaking firmly commands respect at mealtimes – and every child needs boundaries. “Since babies, little ones use food as a form of manipulation. And mothers are so busy or guilty that they give in easily. It is necessary to put order in the mess and dedicate time to teach how to eat”, she says.

Infant feeding specialist for more than a decade, she earned the nickname of Supernanny das Dietas from her clientele for giving consultations at home. At the mini-clients’ house, she weighs and measures the little ones, checks the results of medical tests and listens to her mother’s complaints and wishes – if necessary, she goes to the supermarket. In consultations, she teaches desperate mothers, grandmothers and nannies how to overcome occasional tantrums and prevent the meal table from becoming a battlefield.
