You can stay active even during your period, as there are no contraindications when it comes to exercising. “If you feel more sensitive during this time of the month, choose to reduce the intensity of your workouts, but remain firm in training”, suggests Giselle Novaes, a gynecologist at the Hospital Adventista Silvestre, in Rio de Janeiro.

2. Suspending menstruation is bad for health
Myth. As long as it is evaluated and guided by a gynecologist, there is no harm in suspending menstruation, either by clinical recommendation or by personal desire.
3. Intense exercise reduces or even stops the flow
True. Excessive vigorous physical activity can, yes, deregulate hormone levels and cause a change in menstrual rhythm. “In some cases there may even be a complete absence of menstruation, which is what we call amenorrhea”, says Giselle. On the other hand, moderate exercise stimulates the body to release endorphins, a substance directly related to the reduction of stress, which helps to regulate menstruation.
4. Stepping on cold ground makes colic worse
Myth. Exposure to low temperatures does not influence pain intensity. “It is also not necessary to give up swimming, eating ice cream or drinking cold drinks”, clarifies the specialist.
5. Acne gets worse when you have those days
True. The hormonal changes that occur during menstruation increase the oiliness of the skin, favoring small eruptions on the face. “A combined treatment between the gynecologist and the dermatologist can alleviate the problem”, guarantees Giselle.
6. Is it possible to get pregnant during your period
True. The chances of pregnancy in this period are low, but they exist. So be sure to use a contraceptive method – and protect against sexually transmitted diseases, of course. If it’s comfortable for you and your partner, it’s okay to have sex at this stage.
