Arriving in my hometown, Santos (on the coast of São Paulo), and seeing that people didn’t recognize me opened my eyes so that I could see for the first time the 18 kilos I had gained when I left home to pursue a dream. Some say that I was daring when I left my nutritionist diploma in a drawer and left Santos (on the coast of São Paulo) for Vale do Ribeira, near Curitiba, with the idea of ​​opening a nightclub. I knew it was a good deal, but I had no idea how much trouble it would take.

The bureaucracy was so big that I had to do double shifts: in the morning, I would run after the paperwork and suppliers and, later, I would spend the whole night coordinating the shows. Stress was my biggest companion and I couldn’t have a quiet meal without having a list of things to solve in my head. The weeks went by and I didn’t see that I was gaining weight. And it’s not that I ate too much. On the contrary: he only ate lunch when he could and practically had breakfast for dinner. Bad choice, right?

As my clothes no longer fit me, I changed the jeans for leggings and the t-shirts for dresses. After a year and eight months, my patience ran out with all the demands to keep the business going and I returned home. There, people commented on how I had put on weight. Even my mother took my foot to watch my weight. The concern was not for nothing, since, ten years before, I had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, the result of a teenage trauma: at 18, I was raped in a nightclub and that acted as a trigger for the onset of the autoimmune disease.

We knew that I needed to take very good care of my diet because I have to control what I eat in order to calculate the right amount of insulin to apply. But instead, I went into a depressive process and stopped leaving the house. He didn’t care what he put on his plate and didn’t want to meet anyone else. At Christmas, my mother asked me what I wanted for a present and I asked for a visit to a spa. I expected to lose at least 15 kilos in the 20 days I would spend there, but I lost only 6. I was very disappointed. After all, I exercised four times a day. And loved it! As a teenager, I always enjoyed bodybuilding.

Ah, but whoever thought I was going to give up was wrong. I stayed firm and strong with food reeducation and gymnastics. I took a lunch box upstairs and downstairs and kept the daily menu up to 1,200 calories. I accelerated the weight loss and, in less than a year, I was back at 65 kilos. Everything was great: I started practicing muay thai, I got a new job… But then I had an accident at work – I seriously injured my arm – and I was banned from doing any activity for two years. Even so, I continued with control on the plate and reached 55 kilos. We end up learning what is good for our body.

In March of last year, I was released to practice running. It was like love at first sight, the kind that moves even the soul. I remember crying as I completed my first 10km run. It’s like I broke with the depression of the past, you know? On the track, I met new friends, with whom I’m always together – we used to participate in ultramarathon relays. I even conquered a half marathon! Today, I run for diabetics. I run for women. I run to feel confident, alive and free. I run to be happy!

1 PREPARE YOUR MARMITA.
With the rush of everyday life, it’s hard to eat every three hours. So always have a snack on hand. “When I know I won’t have time for lunch, I cook a grilled dish with vegetables to eat anywhere”, says Miriã.

2 GET ON THE SCALE.
Once a week, check your weight and celebrate each achievement. Just do not do it every day to avoid neuroses. If the result is not what you expected, keep calm and rethink your exaggerations.

3 INVEST IN THERMOGENS.
To speed up metabolism, a little extra – and tasty – help is most welcome. Miriam bets on mate tea, peanuts and cinnamon. “I drink coffee even before bed.”
