Occasionally, within professional sports there are stories whose drama is the same as that of the most famous films. Without exaggeration, the trajectory of the great Ukrainian ice skating athlete Aljona Savchenko is one of them. To achieve her dreams, this athlete had to overcome many obstacles, but she didn’t give up until she reached her goal.

It all started in the 80s, in a Ukrainian town called Obujov. Precisely there, little Aljona chose some ice skates as a birthday present and fell in love with figure skating. She started practicing this sport professionally at the age of five. Her family did not have the opportunity to move to the capital Kiev, so for 9 years Aljona had to travel 45 kilometers every day.
The girl opted for pair skating, therefore she needed a stable and reliable partner. Aljona’s second partner was Stanislav Morozov and together they won the youth world championship in 2000. 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, they were only ranked 15th🇧🇷 Soon, Stanislav received a serious injury, and Savchenko had to find another partner.
Neither in Ukraine nor in Russia did she find a partner and sponsorship. So he was recommended to look for the German trainer Ingo Steuer, who had an available partner named Robin Szolkowy. Aljona Savchenko moved to Germany, changed his sporting nationality and thus began the duo Savchenko and Szolkowy, which followed for a full ten years.
Little by little, the couple began to collect victories: first in the German championship, and after some time, they won the European and world championships. At the 2006 Invention Olympics in Turin, Savchenko and Szolkowy took sixth place, but they haven’t stopped.
Us Next Olympic Games in Vancouver-2010, Savchenko and Szolkowy were considered favorites, as by that time they had won everything. After the short program, they lost less than a point against a Chinese couple, but in the free program, Robin fell and the end result was a bronze medal.
Figure skating is one of the most dangerous sports, but health problems haven’t stopped Aljona. His objective was clear and precise: the gold medal of the Olympic Games, which meant that the struggle must continue. There were several competitions and victories in international events. Many believed that the Sochi Olympic Games could be the last opportunity for the athletes, but again they were unlucky in the main competition: a fall while running the program and another bronze medal.
Time after the Sochi Games, Szolkowy said his career was over. At that time, Aljona was already 30 years old, but she still wasn’t satisfied. She found a new partner: the young Frenchman Bruno Massot. For a long time he was not allowed to go to Germany, but finally the officials managed to reach an agreement and the couple began to participate in competitions. “I want to win the 2018 Olympics gold medal with my new partner Bruno, I am very happy that he accepted to be my partner”, said Aljona.
Few people believed in his success. Bruno was considered a “wooden boy”, Aljona was not so young anymore from a sporting point of view, not to mention the many unhealed injuries. Why did she need the gold? It was her dream and she wouldn’t give up on it.
Little by little, the couple began to work and win in major competitions, and put all their strength into the Pyongyang Olympic Games. The silver medal at the World Championships was the highest award that Savchenko and Massot could win before the 2018 Winter Olympics. But on February 15, 2018, their dream was finally realized.
In the short program, Bruno made a mistake and the couple ended up in fourth place, losing almost 6 points. Everything indicated that the gold medal was lost. But by executing an extremely difficult, literally breathtaking program, Savchenko and Massot not only broke the world record, but beat all competitors, winning the coveted medal. I thank everyone who betrayed and mistreated me: they taught me to always be on the alert. I thank everyone who hurt me: they taught me to grow in pain. Most importantly, I thank all those who love me for who I am. They give me strength to live.
How much experience, painful losses, ups and downs, changing citizenship and pairs of skates. All this to fulfill the dream of his entire life. If it weren’t for that steel character, that willpower, his absolute talent and a great deal of experience, it would be unlikely that this star would shine as he has done so far, achieving the most important victory of his life. With her example, she shows us that nothing is impossible, you just have to work and make an effort.
