ABDL, a disorder you probably didn’t know about

Miguelito wears diapers, wears a cute little blue suit and takes his bottle when he is hungry while sitting in his crib. All of that would be very good if Miguelito were a boy. In reality, this is a 37-year-old man who works as a business administrator and who likes to be cared for like a baby… an adult baby.

He is one of the thousands of cases that exist in the world of ABDL, (in English Adult Baby Diaper Lover) which means ‘Adult Baby and Diaper Lover’. They are people who confess to feeling relaxed and at peace when they adopt this personality and behavior, but in no case do they feel sexual attraction to children.

A few days ago, the television program Conexión Samanta (Spain’s Channel 4) broadcast an interesting report on various cases of ABDL. One of them was Miguelito, who confessed to the journalist that his dream day was to spend all day with her nanny receiving care and attention.

The scientific name of this practice, which should not be confused with a pathology, is paraphilic infantilism or autonepiophilia. Psychologists insist on clarifying that it is a disorder that has nothing to do with pedophilia. “These people enjoy behaving like babies or being cared for as such, but they do not feel any type of sexual attraction to children,” says Spanish psychologist Laura García.

Another specialist on the subject, psychologist María Antonia Colom, explains in the Spanish broadcast that almost all adult babies and diaper lovers have consulted their case with a professional. She assures that the vast majority are married and have a correct level of education. However, this curious paraphilia is hidden by those who suffer from it: “If you were a relative of an adult baby, you probably wouldn’t know,” Colom said, adding that “if they don’t treat their disorder, they will have serious problems.”

It is estimated that 1 in every 1,000 inhabitants likes to feel like a baby. A documentary on the British channel Channel 4, titled “15 Stone-Babies”, indicated that there are between 200,000 and 500,000 adult babies in New Jersey (United Kingdom) alone. The report by journalist Samanta Villar, of great quality for the respect with which she treats the interviewees and for having managed to record stories that had never been made public, shows us the great market that exists for them.

Such is the case of the ABDL Factory store in Holland, which organizes a parade every year with Baby products for adults and is attended by people from all over the world. Likewise, ABDL people have nannies or caregivers, like Carmen, who understand that it is just a fantasy. In fact, the relationship with them does not have a sexual connotation. If anything unites adult babies, it is their fear of rejection and misunderstanding.

The world of ABDL is unknown, vast and, it seems, quite harmless. It is worth trying to understand it.
