Many artists do not usually portray only their own reality in their paintings. Several of them also keep secrets in their paintings, giving them a unique meaning. Do you want to know what is hidden in some world famous paintings? Then read on.
O incredible.club gathered some very interesting secrets hidden in very famous works of art. Check out!
1. The Night Watch, Rembrandt (1642)
The painting is known as “The Night Watch” due to the darkness of the background where the characters appear. However, this color was due to oxidation of the varnish and soot accumulated over time. When the work was restored in 1947, it was noticed that the scene took place during the day.
2. The Old Fisherman (1902)
This work, by Hungarian artist Tivadar Kosztka, has a mysterious secret: if you look at it by placing a mirror in the middle of the canvas, you can see the face of God on the right of the fisherman and the face of the Devil on the left. It is an optical illusion that hides the clash between good and evil.
3. Mona Lisa, Leonardo Da Vinci (1503)
The artist added miniature letters and symbols to the Mona Lisa’s pupils. According to the Italian researcher Silvano Vinceti, on the right eye are the letters LV, which could refer to the author, Leonardo Da Vinci. The left eye’s lettering is not very clear, but Vinceti believes it to be a “B” or “S”, or possibly the initials “CE”. The investigator considers that they are vitally important keys to the model’s identity.
4. The Last Supper, Leonardo Da Vinci (1498)
The Italian scholar Giovanni Maria Pala concluded that the painting hides a musical score. According to his theory, the bread placed on the table and the hands of the apostles and Jesus form a requiem. The discovery is described in detail in a researcher’s book.
5. The Spring, Sandro Botticelli (1482)
In the garden in Boticelli’s work, at least 500 different types of plants and 190 different types of flowers appear. Several studies have revealed that most of them actually exist, and that these flora have been painstakingly painted in detail. However, it is believed that some are the fruit of the author’s imagination, as a hybrid between reality and fantasy.
6. Broadway Boogie — Woogie, Mondrian (1943)
Although it is an abstract work, the Dutch artist wanted to represent, in a totally innovative way, a map of the streets of New York, the city where he moved in 1940.
7. The Starry Night, Van Gogh (1888)
This work was painted while the Dutch artist was hospitalized at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy due to a mental breakdown. Van Gogh was allowed to occupy two residences: one for sleeping and one that he used as a studio. He could also go out to paint outdoors, as long as he was in the company of an employee of the establishment.
8. The Garden of Earthly Delights, Bosch (1515)
In the right part of the work, which symbolizes hell, it is possible to see a score that is divided between a book and the buttocks of a tortured man. This discovery was made by two students from Oklahoma, USA, who put the finding in the hands of the music department of the local university, thus obtaining a more accurate result. The song was named “The music of the rear”, and today it can be easily heard.
