8 bizarre and unusual stories that happened at weddings

Weddings can often be as unpredictable as, say, our own lives. Despite all the planning and a thousand and one resources to ensure that certain surprises go a long way from the big day, the fact is that, at times, they are somewhat unavoidable. Whether due to a chance coincidence, a moment of exaggerated emotion on the part of the bride or groom, or minor accidents on the way, certain ceremonies can yield memorable moments and good stories to tell.

We talked to professionals in the field and protagonist grooms, who are used to experiencing all sorts of bizarre things during marriages and, here, we show some of the most unusual and/or surprising events. You can get the popcorn!

1. Caught

“It wasn’t long before the ceremony began. I decided to go to the bathroom to adjust the knot on my tie, and ended up opting for one that was almost hidden, behind the lounge – where the reception would later be. There, I found the groom at a ‘bachelor party’, with one of the groomsmen kissing, just the two of them. Seeing me, the groom got desperate, he even offered me money, but I assured him I wouldn’t say anything to anyone. The ceremony took place, with him swearing his love to the bride”.

2. Adventurous Bouquet

“Everything was going well at the wedding, everything was fine. Nothing had been a problem, and then it was time to toss the bouquet. On the dance floor there was a square metal support, like, suspended from the ceiling – where the floor lighting was, speakers, that kind of thing. I was supposed to throw the bouquet, of course, under the stand, to the people. And then I took the bouquet: photo ready, filming ready, everyone positioned, DJ calling… It counted ‘1,2,3’ twice, and I didn’t play. The third time I played really hard and really high, and the bouquet landed right on top of the support! It made a perfect curve, a perfect parabola, and stopped there – it wasn’t low support, it was high support.

There was no way to get it, not even on top of a chair, you would need a high ladder and all. Then everyone laughing, me laughing, my husband laughing (we took it easy, which was really cool). The staff went behind a ladder, but they didn’t find it. My uncle took a chair from the party, climbed on it and they started to hold his leg, to try to lift him up, to see if it would work – it didn’t. And then my uncle jumped: he jumped out of the chair, hung on to the support with both hands and kept trying to hit the bouquet, until the bouquet fell back to the floor.

With the help of my cousins, they managed to put my uncle back on the ground. I managed to throw the bouquet, my cousin caught it and got married a few weeks ago. It was an adventurous bouquet, but it was a lucky bouquet!”

3. Cinderella

“It seems unbelievable, but we held a wedding at Bistrô Ruella, in Vila Olímpia, and, at the end of the party, the bride, already barefoot, with her shoes in her hand, stopped to take some photos in front of the restaurant, with some friends. She left the pair of shoes in a vase outside, but when we went to get them… they were gone! We never found it again.”

4. Even underwater

“The couple Lisa and Lucas hired me for the celebration on a Saturday afternoon, on the north coast of São Paulo. Everything was very beautiful, with impeccable decoration for an outdoor wedding, worthy of a dream. With all the guests present, already seated in their seats, the ceremony begins with the traditional procession of parents and godparents, the entrance of the groom and, finally, that of the bride. I started the ceremony by welcoming everyone, and then moved on to the reflection of the moment. Close to the couple’s vows, in a matter of minutes, the weather turned and it started to rain.

The guests opened their umbrellas and we continued the ceremony. However, the rain became torrential and most of the guests went to another space, to protect themselves. It was me, the bride and groom, the godparents, the production, advisory, photo and video staff (these, trying to protect their equipment).

Faced with this, I asked: ‘Are we going to stay here or not?’. The bride and groom answered me, with a big laugh: ‘Of course, let’s stay here!’.

We smiled a lot and continued the ceremony. The bride and groom’s vows, which were written on paper, dissolved, and heart and emotion spoke louder. Even my writings, in tablet, I couldn’t access it, as I couldn’t read – let alone use the glasses. All of us, wet, had to improvise, and something very interesting turned out. The bride and groom didn’t worry about the clothes, makeup, hairstyle, shoes or bouquet… the rain made us more comfortable, and the emotion of realizing a dream together with all those present increased”.

5. What alliances?

“The wedding was on the beach, in Bertioga (SP). Soon, all the family and friends headed to the coast, since they all lived in ABC cities. Moments before the ceremony, the groom went into despair: he forgot his rings at home in the city of São Caetano. The way was to improvise, and he had the help of two godfathers, who ‘borrowed’ their rings.

When the rings were exchanged, the bride realized her mistake – and the groom, discreetly, said: ‘I’ll explain later’”.

6. Lost the line

“This has been happening a lot lately, but I’ve never seen it so clearly. It’s just that many Catholic churches are now forming ceremonial organization groups – which, in itself, is already complicated. We, as advisors, cannot interfere with anything in the course (not even adjusting the bride’s mantilla). The fact is that, halfway through the ceremony, the photographer was capturing the exchange of rings, behold, the priest turns to him and says:

‘He arrives! You’ve already taken too many pictures!’

Nobody knew what to do. All the rest of the ceremony was still missing, and the priest drops one of these? The nervousness of both the bride and groom was visible. The rest of the photos were taken away from the altar.”

7. #Sincere

“During the vows, following the American model, in which both write a declaration of love in secret, to be read during the moment, the bride decides to utter the verb:

‘I know your mother doesn’t like me. That your cousins think I’m a whore, and that your grandmother said I’d only be interested in her money, because I’m divorced. I don’t care, what really matters is what I feel for you. It’s you I’m marrying, not them!’

That day I fluctuated between purple and red, I was in a cold sweat, not knowing if that would have any consequences during the ceremony. But nobody said anything and everything flowed!”.

8. Once upon a time there was a vase

“As a guideline, we cannot touch any guests, least of all children. That’s why we end up encouraging couples to hire recreation groups at weddings, because then the parents start enjoying the party and the child is free to do whatever he wants. That’s exactly what happened, two hours after the party started, we realized that one of the children wasn’t with their mother – that’s when I received a call on the radio, to control a situation:

The two-year-old was on the table, pulling on the tablecloth, about to knock over a two-foot-tall vase! Not to mention the flowers.”
