6 ways to wear the controversial birken sandals

Although some fashionistas turn up their noses at even hearing the name of these sandals, comparing them to Crocs and calling them “ugly shoes” or “hippie slippers”, birken (from Birkenstock, name of the original German model) are in shop windows and win more admirers every day, especially for their comfort.

Its appearance is quite rough, but intentionally: the aim is for it to be stripped down and that even when produced from more sophisticated materials or decorated with glitter or rhinestones, it does not fail to have a sporty look, capable of breaking a little seriousness or romanticism of any look. It’s like she’s the boot of the sandals.

Birken fits into a style out there called normcore, which is fundamentally a trend that prioritizes simplicity and comfort above any question of style and beauty.

And, to that end, it has been combined with all kinds of clothes, skirts, shorts, short and long dresses, jeans and tailored pants, etc., generally looking for a contradictory combination between the look and the footwear (but don’t worry: birken is democratic, use it however you like).

In this sense, Danyla Borobia, personal stylist and director of the consultancy Divã do Estilo, points out that “making the counterpoint is the leap of the cat, so if the look is all formal, feminine or even with a more rock and roll feel and wear a item of clothing with a more normcore (birken) feel, the woman will look attuned”.

According to Danyla, “the only restriction is in the business world. Some companies don’t allow it, as they have a stricter dress code, so before using it, it’s good to check with the HR staff.”

Regarding body types, the personal stylist says that there is no restriction, but that there are some tricks that can be used to balance the silhouette:

“For short, thick legs and overweight women, it is best to pair it with shorts, skirts and shorter dresses and wear birken in a more neutral color, such as nude, so the silhouette will be more elongated. A good midi skirt with a high waistline also helps balance these types of silhouettes. Jumpsuits (famous jumpsuits) in darker colors give the feeling of a more elongated and slimmer silhouette, and are super current when composed with birken. Another easy trick is to always highlight the woman’s face. Putting on a deeper neckline, wearing a flashy necklace or a scarf can add a few inches to your height. The most important thing is that the woman feels good about the look.”

According to Danyla Borobia, “items such as skirts, shorts and dresses are great to compose looks with this type of sandal, as they are from the informal, sporty and not sexy universe, but when composed with feminine pieces they make the look more balanced. To look super modern and feminine, the cool thing is to wear skirts and shorts with a high waist. Pleated skirts and trumpet are a great option.”

Regarding the combination with dresses, the personal stylist points out that the best combinations are made with dresses made of “flowing fabrics and floral prints that leave the look with a summer scent”.

Despite bloggers who most often adopt the birken and boyfriend pants combination, Danyla says that “the tightest pants like skinny ones are a great choice”.

With flowing/tailored pants

Another very common combination to do with birken is with pants made of more fluid fabrics, or tailored pants, which are a little more elegant. Danyla Borobia gives the tip, saying that “for a more sophisticated and bold look, compose the birken with tailored pants and a maxi necklace”.

The combination of birken with shorts is one of the most intuitive and laid-back. Destroyed jeans, “destroyed”, are the most used among bloggers, usually combined with caminas. However, nothing prevents you from combining the birken with tailored shorts, sports, or lighter and fluid fabric.
