Magnesium is present in several foods that we love: almonds, zucchini, carrots, spinach, eggs, nuts and seafood are some of the main sources of this important mineral. However, a large part of the population does not consume the nutrient in adequate doses – and the result is serious health problems.

Check below some of the main symptoms of this deficit and pay attention if it is not the case to talk to your doctor to investigate if everything is in order with your exams.
1. Signs of the flu
The mineral acts directly on the activity of leukocytes, responsible for keeping the body’s defenses stabilized. “When the body is lacking, the person is more susceptible to flu and other diseases that can cause fatigue, tiredness, nausea and loss of appetite”, explains Maria Flávia Sgavioli, functional clinical nutritionist at Estima Nutrição, in São Paulo.
2. Cramp
Part of the magnesium we consume is stored in the tissues in order to act in the process of muscle contraction. If these reserves start to run low, the muscles lose their ability to relax and involuntary (and painful) spasms appear.

3. Tingling
Another responsibility of this nutrient is to ensure the relaxation of the arteries. When its available amount in the body is insufficient, the pressure on the nerves increases, causing numbness and tingling.
4. Convulsions
Magnesium has a calming effect on the nervous system. “Its acute deficit causes the nerves to lose control over muscle activity, which can make certain regions of the brain very excited and, consequently, cause seizures”, says the nutritionist.
5. Heart problems
The lack of this mineral also causes continuous contractions of the coronary arteries, which decreases the amount of oxygen available to the main muscle of the body. “Another effect is the reduction in the production of nitric oxide, which acts in the relaxation of the blood vessels”, highlights Maria Flávia. This makes the heart work harder, raising blood pressure and causing cardiac arrhythmias.

6. Mood swings
Magnesium is essential for the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter related to the feeling of pleasure and well-being. Its precariousness causes irritability, anxiety, nervousness, hyperactivity and insomnia. “If the deficiency lasts for a long time, it is possible that the person develops depression and suffers from panic attacks”, warns the specialist.
