When we think of animals, usually the image that comes to mind is dogs, cats, turtles or, at most, some well-known wild animals, such as lions, zebras and parrots. But nature is much more complex than that and no matter how much we human beings strive to extinguish many species, nature always hides incredible surprises when it comes to strange creatures.
In this post, the awesome.club features 50 species unknown to most people Check it out!
1. Fennec fox or desert fox
The unique physical structure of the fennec or desert fox helps it to live in the desert. Its huge ears are its main feature and its paws are covered in thick fur to protect it from the hot sand. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in personality. Fennec foxes even know how to purr like a cat when they are happy. Isn’t it love?
2. Axolotl or Mexican Salamander
The axolotls or Mexican salamanders are in critical danger of extinction and we can only find them in one place: in the lakes and canals of central Mexico. Have you noticed those ‘streaks’ coming out of your head? They seem useless, but actually increase the area for gas exchange.
3. Giant isopod
Giant isopods live at depths of up to 2,140 meters in the sea. Scientists believe that its enormous size helps it withstand the pressure of the deep ocean. They almost exclusively eat the remains of dead animals, and when they find something fresh on the ocean floor, they eat a lot, because they don’t always know when their next meal will be. Since they live in the depths and obtaining food is a great challenge, giant isopods have an extremely slow metabolism. It’s possible that they won’t need to eat anything for years thanks to this unique feature.
4. Goblin shark
The goblin shark is known to live in the depths of the sea, as it doesn’t like light. Even though it looks very strange and dangerous, this fish is less aggressive than other shark species. It mainly eats fish, crabs and shellfish in general.
5. Golden Frog
If you’re more afraid of the shark above than this cute little frog, you better think twice. This so ‘gute-gute’ amphibian is one of the most venomous creatures in the world. They are not born poisonous, but they get their poison from what they eat. Golden frogs only use the poison to defend themselves, but it is so strong that the toxins from just one frog can kill 2 elephants. These creatures are very rare and live in the Colombian jungle.
6. Pichiciego-minor
Despite its small size, this tiny creature has very powerful claws that make it an exceptionally good digger. Its carapace is pink because the blood vessels are very close to the surface.
7. Tube-nosed bat
The tube-shaped nostrils are the reason for this bat’s name. It likes to eat fruit and its unique nostrils allow it to breathe while sticking its face against a fruit to extract all of its pulp.
8. Star-nosed mole
These animals are almost completely blind, but that doesn’t affect them too much because they also have 22 tentacles around their snout, which, in turn, have 25,000 sensors, and this makes their olfactory senses extremely sensitive. They can even smell underwater.
9. Blobfish, blobfish or blobfish
The blobfish, blobfish, or blobfish has neither bones nor teeth, nor much muscle. That’s why it has a very slow lifestyle and spends its entire life crawling along the bottom of the sea in search of food such as molluscs or crabs.
10. Irrawaddy Dolphin
If you were to draw a dolphin, you would normally include its characteristic beak, but in this case, what stands out is precisely the lack of it, making this guy more like a whale. The Irrawaddy dolphin has a very unique appearance and its round face is one of its main features. Even if it is not in danger of extinction, there are few specimens and in very specific regions of the Planet.
11. Yeti Crab
This crab’s fur is scary, but at the same time, it’s practical: they feed on the microbes that grow on these fur – that is, they carry their own food. They live near hot water vents in Antarctica (near volcanoes) and make their lives a constant adventure, as one wrong move could mean boiling to death or, depending on the move, freezing to death.
12. Leaf-tailed satanic gecko or leaf-tailed satanic gecko
These creatures stand out for their camouflage abilities. It is almost impossible to see them in their natural habitat. But they don’t rely on this ability when hunting, as they only look like a tree leaf when resting. We can only find them in Madagascar.
13. Giant spider crab
The name ‘giant spider crab’ is due to the length of its legs, which can measure up to 3.8 meters. They live in very deep water and are very good at camouflage, which they do with sea sponges and anemones.
14. breviceps macrops
These frogs are small and don’t even reach 1 centimeter, which makes them the smallest frogs in the world. They live in dunes and desert areas in the south of the African continent. Unfortunately, they are in danger of extinction, mainly due to the increasing occupation of desert areas. They make a very interesting sound, similar to a noisy toy.
15. The Blue Dragon
This magnificent sea slug has developed the perfect color to hide while floating on the surface of the oceans. The “sapphire” colored side of its body is on top and blends perfectly with the blue sea water, while the silver part is on the bottom so that predators cannot recognize it from below. The blue dragon is not poisonous, but it can absorb the poison from what it eats, concentrate it and store it for later use if attacked.
16. Proboscis monkey
When you see this monkey, the first thing you notice is the size of its snout, which can measure up to 18 centimeters. Males usually have larger snouts than females. Researchers believe that the longer the male’s snout, the more attractive it is to females.
17. sea lion
This is another example of the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”. The sea wolf may seem fearsome and aggressive, but it is actually very shy, as it remains hidden most of the time. It has an antifreeze system that allows it to live in very cold conditions.
18. Dugong
They are very large animals, but very docile and calm. Dugongs are the only 100% vegetarian marine mammals. In order to maintain their size, they need to eat approximately 50 kg of algae every day. The shape of the face and upper lip are perfectly adapted for feeding on the ocean floor.
19. Boxer Crab
Boxer crabs are famous for the way they move. They always have a small sea anemone in each claw, like boxing gloves, hence their name. They do this for their defense and to capture food.
20. Batfish
This strange looking fish can be easily recognized by its bright red lips. It really looks like he’s wearing lipstick! It also has a unique way of “walking” on the ocean floor using its modified fins.
21. Haitian Solenodon or Agouta
These amusing animals have a unique characteristic with their unusual, long and very flexible snouts. The ‘big nose’ plays a key role in the task of finding food.
22. Clog Bib
This is an incredibly large bird, half stork and half pelican, with wingspans that can extend to an eight-foot wingspan. It is usually seen close to hippos and, when these huge mammals enter the water, forcing the fish to surface, they enjoy the ‘banquet’. They received their name precisely because of the beak, which is very efficient in hunting fish. The bird also has the ability to stay still for hours to get the exact moment of the attack.
23. Saiga
This antelope can be easily recognized by its head with a very mobile muzzle and colorful horns. Unfortunately, they are critically endangered, and there is a high probability that they will disappear for good.
24. Red Slender Lorikeet
This is a very slow animal that lives mainly in trees. They are very amusing with their huge eyes and a permanent expression of surprise. That’s why they bear the name “loris”, which means “clown”. They have no tail and use hands and legs to move from tree to tree.
25. Porcupine
These animals are not rare, but they were included in our selection due to their strange appearance. They live in all oceans, but often in places so deep that most of us will never see them. They play an essential role in the ecosystem, as they basically clean the ocean by feeding on debris, from decaying plants to dead animals.
26. Purple frog
The Indian toad is the sole survivor of a group of amphibians that evolved 130 million years ago. In its adult age, it spends most of its time underground and only comes out to the surface for a few weeks to reproduce.
27. Pirarucu
Animal well known to us Brazilians, especially in the northern region. It is one of the largest fish that exist, reaching up to 4.5 meters. To survive, it has evolved a special swim bladder and can absorb surface air. It has a huge mouth and not only catches relatively large fish, but also birds when they are on the surface of the water.
28. Andean Condor
A really big bird. Its wingspan can reach 3 meters, but although its wings are surprisingly large, it is not so good at flying. It fights to stay in the air when it flies, precisely because of its weight, preferring areas with large air currents where it can glide over them, being able to reach greater heights.
29. Aie-aye
A very strange looking animal. It only lives on the island of Madagascar and at one time it was believed to be extinct. Although this is not the case, the species is at great risk. An interesting fact about it is that, as in the case of rats, for example, its teeth never stop growing and, in order to wear them down, maintaining its size, it needs to gnaw something all the time.
30. Hermit Ibis
The Hermit Ibis prefers to live near running water and will normally stay in groups. Its distinguishing feature is a shiny black body and a completely featherless red face. It used to be found in several regions, but the contamination of the waters made it enter the list of endangered species. There are believed to be around 500 such birds, mostly in Morocco and some areas in Syria.
31. Eurynorhynchus pygmeus
One of the rarest birds in the world. Its beak has a singular and unique appearance, which is why it was named “spoon-billed sandpiper” which means “spoon beak”. It lives in the north of Russia, along the coast of the Bering Sea, migrating south in winter. There was a time when it almost became extinct, and currently, environmentalists and authorities are making a lot of efforts to save them.
32. Metal tarantula
Most people don’t like spiders, but we must admit that this one is very beautiful. Even though there are no records of deaths because of his…
