Uric acid is a substance that comes from the decomposition of certain food sources. It is sent into the blood, and then the kidneys eliminate it from the body.
However, when there are interruptions in your elimination process – either because the body becomes less capable of it or because there is too much uric acid – inflammatory reactions can arise that affect quality of life, causing joint pain and an increased risk of gout and kidney stones.
But there are natural remedies that are beneficial, such as some teas that have diuretic and purifying properties. See some options:
1. Milk thistle tea
Milk thistle is a plant with many health benefits and tea made from it improves the functions of the body’s excretory organs. Its antioxidants support liver functions and at the same time help clean the blood, preventing problems caused by excess uric acid.
How to make
- Crush the milk thistle buds with a mortar and pestle – approximately 2 tablespoons of milk thistle yolks (30 g);
- Heat 1 cup of water (250 ml) in a saucepan and, before boiling, add the milk thistle;
- Lower the heat and leave for 5 minutes. Turn off, wait to cool down for 10 minutes;
- Drink it mid-morning and, if desired, again mid-afternoon, for at least three weeks on a continuous basis.
2. Dandelion tea
Dandelion’s cleansing and diuretic properties are good for lowering uric acid levels. Its components improve kidney and liver functions and also prevent fluid retention.
How to make
- Place an approximate amount of 1 teaspoon of dried dandelion petals (5 g) – in 1 cup of boiling water (250 ml);
- Cover the tea and leave for 10 minutes;
- Drink two cups a day for two weeks.
3. Artichoke tea
Artichoke contains linoleic, oleic and caffeic acids that help in the breakdown and elimination of purines from the bloodstream. Its diuretic properties help the production of urine, which is a key factor in reducing uric acid.
How to make
- Wash 1 artichoke and cut the stem with a knife;
- Remove the outer leaves and leave only the softest ones;
- Pour 2 cups of water (500 ml) into a pan and bring to a boil;
- When it boils, add the artichoke leaves and lower the heat, leaving for another 5 minutes;
- Remove and let cool. Drink one glass on an empty stomach and repeat mid-afternoon for two weeks.
4. Nettle tea
This plant works in blood purification and, when taken as a tea, can reduce inflammation that comes from uric acid retention. Its components help in the elimination of crystals that form in the kidneys.
How to make
- Place 1 teaspoon of nettle (5 g) in 1 cup of boiling water (250 ml) and cover;
- Let cool for 10 to 15 minutes;
- Drink one glass on an empty stomach every day for at least two weeks.
5. Horsetail tea
The diuretic properties of this tea help to increase urine production, which helps eliminate uric acid and other waste products from the body.
How to make
- Add 1 tablespoon of tail (15 g) to 1 cup of boiling water (250 ml);
- Cover and leave for 10 minutes;
- When ready to drink, filter;
- Drink two cups a day – one on an empty stomach and repeat mid-afternoon – for three weeks.
If you have any symptoms that indicate high levels of uric acid, one of these teas can help you control it naturally.
