24 Things People With Good Table Manners Never Forget To Do

What is the correct way to eat?

Chewing with the mouth open reveals impoliteness and is very unpleasant for other people. When eating, even if someone talks to you, wait until you finish chewing the food and then answer the question.

If you’re having a private dinner, don’t use salt or pepper before tasting the meal. Otherwise, you might end up offending the hosts.

Blowing in order to cool the food, as well as cutting certain types of food into several pieces are also not acceptable attitudes in public. This type of behavior is only appropriate for children, but never for adults.

If you are not sure which side the bread plate should go on and which side the wine or other drinks should go on, use your index fingers imagining the letters “p” and “c”. Unfold the napkin in one smooth motion, without shaking it. Large napkins should be folded in half, while small napkins should be fully unfolded.

Keep your napkin on your lap during meals. If you need to leave the table temporarily, keep your napkin on your chair. When the meal is definitely over, place the napkin on the left side of the plate. Never, ever put it on the plate.

We must not rub the lips with the napkin. Rather, it is true pass it gently or “pat” with the napkin. And don’t even think about using the tissue to wipe your silverware or blow your nose.

How to use tableware

There are 2 possible ways to hold a fork: continental and American. In the first case, you must hold the fork from below, with your index finger on it. The second style is characterized by holding the fork as if it were a spoon. Both styles are correct.

How to use cutlery

Drink the soup keeping the spoon away from your body, drinking the liquid while tilting the spoon, avoiding spilling the food.

When eating fish, do not cut food. Instead, use a knife just to separate the bones from the meat.

How to deal with sensitive matters

If you unexpectedly find a bug or a hair on your plate, don’t start screaming or making a fuss. The subject is sensitive, so prefer to call the restaurant manager or the best person to deal with the problem discreetly.

Case do something wrong, apologize once, and don’t keep bringing it up. There is no need to flaunt your mistake to the four corners.

Never use a toothpick or dental floss at the table. Some restaurants even make such objects available, only in the bathroom, where they must be used.
