Psalms to Calm the Heart: The Best for Grief, Anxiety, Healing, and More!

The psalms were originally chants sung by Christians, which were transcribed into the Bible. There are, in all, 150 psalms in the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church and 151 in the Orthodox Church. They are found just after the Book of Job and before the Book of Proverbs, being the largest book in the entire Bible.

They were written by King David in large part, with 74 poems. There are also songs of King Solomon, Asaph and the sons of Korah. Some also have an unknown origin, but all speak equally to the Christian heart. Discover the best psalms for you to use in your daily life.

In many situations, it is difficult not to suffer from anxiety or feel that tightness in your heart from time to time. In this way, the need to reconnect may arise, and the psalms are an excellent way to do this.

For when your heart is tight and life’s tribulations are trying to run you down, read Psalm number 4:

“Hear me when I cry, O God of my righteousness, you have given me strength in my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
Children of men, how long will you turn my glory into infamy? How long will you love vanity and seek a lie?

Know therefore that the Lord hath set apart for himself he that is pious; the Lord will hear when I cry to him.
Be troubled and do not sin; speak with your heart upon your bed, and be silent.
Offer sacrifices of righteousness, and trust in the Lord.

Many say, Who will shew us good? Lord, exalt the light of your countenance upon us.
You have brought joy to my heart more than when their grain and wine multiplied.
In peace I will also lie down and sleep, because you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

If you are discouraged and need a hand of light on your path, you can count on Psalm 8:

“O Lord, our Lord, how admirable is your name in all the earth, for you have set your glory in the heavens!
Thou hast ordained strength from the mouths of babes and sucklings, because of thine enemies, to silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have prepared;
What is mortal man that you are mindful of him? and the son of man, that you visit him?
For you made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor.

You give him dominion over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
All the sheep and oxen, as well as the animals of the field,
The birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord, how admirable is your name in all the earth!”

When your heart is anxious, as if on trial, and you need divine support, read Psalm 26:

“Judge me, Lord, for I have walked in my sincerity; I have also trusted in the Lord; I will not be moved.
Examine me, Lord, and prove me; search my kidneys and my heart.
For your kindness is before my eyes; and I have walked in your truth.

I have not sat down with vain men, nor do I converse with underhanded men.
I have hated the congregation of evildoers; nor do I associate with the wicked.
I wash my hands in innocence; and so will I walk, Lord, around your altar.

To publish with a voice of praise, and to tell of all thy wonders.
Lord, I have loved the habitation of your house and the place where your glory abides.
Take not my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men,
In whose hands is evil, and whose right hand is full of bribes.

But I walk in my sincerity; deliver me and have mercy on me.
My foot is set on a level path; In the congregations I will praise the Lord.”

For times when you need to look up and ask for help in the face of life’s turmoil, use Psalm 121:

“I will lift up my eyes to the mountains, where does my help come from.
My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot waver; he who keeps you will not slumber.

Behold, the Guardian of Israel will not slumber or sleep.
The Lord is who keeps you; the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun will not harm you by day nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will guard your soul.
The Lord will guard your entry and your exit from now and forever.”

Anguish is a tyrant that dominates your heart, without allowing the beauty of life to make your days clearer. To help find the light within your heart, just turn to the Father and, in his praise, plead for help. For this, choose some psalms that will help you calm your heart and fight against anguish.

A troubled mind is the perfect workshop for evil, and it is important to calm the mind and calm the heart. Then read Psalm 41:

“Blessed is he who listens to the poor; the Lord will deliver him in the day of trouble.
The Lord will deliver him, and keep him alive; he shall be blessed in the land, and thou shalt not give him over to the will of his enemies.
The Lord will sustain him on his sickbed; you will restore him from his bed of sickness.

I said: Lord, have mercy on me; heal my soul, because I have sinned against you.
Mine enemies speak evil of me, saying, When shall he die, and his name perish?
And if one of them comes to see me, he speaks empty things; in his heart he heaps up wickedness; going outside, that’s what it talks about.

All who hate me murmur together against me; against me imagine evil, saying:
An evil disease has attached to him; and now that he is lying down, he will not get up again.
Even my own intimate friend, in whom I trusted so much, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

But you, Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up, that I may repay them.
By this I know that you favor me: that my enemy does not triumph over me.
As for me, you uphold me in my sincerity, and set me before your face forever.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from age to age. Amen and Amen.”

The Father’s arms offer all the necessary comfort for days when you need to calm your heart. For that, read Psalm 46:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, even if the earth changes, and even if the mountains move into the midst of the seas.
Even if the waters roar and are disturbed, even if the mountains are shaken by their rage.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy dwelling place of the Most High.
God is in the midst of it; he will not be shaken. God will help her, already at the break of morning.
The Gentiles raged; kingdoms moved; he lifted up his voice and the earth melted.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Come, behold the works of the Lord; what desolations he has made in the land!
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and cuts the spear; burn the chariots in the fire.
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the Gentiles; I will be exalted above the earth.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”

Reading a psalm aloud is perfect for calming the heart, reducing the anguish that insists on approaching. Choose Psalm 50 and call Heaven to your bosom:

“The mighty God, the Lord, spoke and called the earth from the rising of the sun until its setting.
From Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shone.
Our God will come and not be silent; a fire will burn before him, and there will be a great storm around him.

He will call the heavens from above, and the earth, to judge his people.
Assemble me my saints, those who made a covenant with me with sacrifices.
And the heavens will declare his righteousness; for God himself is the Judge. (Saddle.)
Hear, my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against you, I am God, I am your God.

I will not rebuke you for your sacrifices, or burnt offerings, which are continually before me.
I will not take a calf from your house, nor goats from your pens.
Because mine is every animal of the wild, and the cattle over thousands of mountains.
I know all the birds of the mountains; and mine are all the beasts of the field.

If I were hungry, I wouldn’t tell you, because mine is the world and all its fullness.
Shall I eat the flesh of bulls? or shall I drink the blood of goats?
Offer to God a sacrifice of praise, and pay your vows to the Most High.
And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will glorify me.

But to the wicked God says, What do you do to recite my statutes, and to take my covenant in your mouth?
Since you hate correction, and cast my words behind you.
When you see the thief, you consent to him, and you have your share with adulterers.
You loose your mouth to evil, and your tongue makes up deceit.

You sit and speak against your brother; you speak evil against your mother’s son.
These things you have done, and I was silent; you thought I was like you, but I will reason with you, and I will set them in order before your eyes:

Hear this therefore, you who forget God; lest I tear you to pieces, with no one to deliver you.
He who offers the sacrifice of praise will glorify me; and to him that orders his way well I will show the salvation of God.”

So many are the words and so many are the signs of God to calm the heart of a beloved child. Psalm 77 helps heal anguish and find yourself again:

“I cried out to God with my voice, to God I lifted up my voice, and he inclined his ear to me.
In the day of my distress I sought the Lord; my hand stretched out in the night, and it did not cease; my soul refused to be consoled.
I remembered God, and I was troubled; she complained to me, and my spirit failed.

You kept my eyes awake; I’m so upset I can’t speak.
He considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
At night I called my song to remembrance; I meditated in my heart, and my spirit searched.

Will he reject the Lord forever and not return to favor?
Has his kindness ceased forever? Is the promise from generation to generation over?
Did God forget to have mercy? Or did he shut up his mercies in his anger?
And I said, This is my infirmity; but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.

I will remember the works of the Lord; surely I will remember your wonders of old.
I will meditate also on all your works, and I will speak of your deeds.
Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary. Who is God as great as our God?
You are the God who does wonders; you have made known your strength among the peoples.

With your arm you redeemed your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph.
The waters saw you, O God, the waters…
