15 Decorating Mistakes We Don’t Make Anymore Thanks to “Irmãos à Obra”

We learn from the program brother to the work that renovating and decorating a house is hard work that requires a lot of creativity. Combination of colors and materials, arrangement of rooms and furniture, lighting, air circulation… reality show taught us that there is a lot to take into account! A good start is knowing what not to do when renovating the house.

To get the design right, the awesome.club gathered decorating mistakes that we won’t make again thanks to the twins Drew and Jonathan Scott.

1. Separate the kitchen from the living rooms

Open concept is lesson number 1 in the brothers at work, who appears in almost every episode. The goal is to make the space feel larger, use as much natural light as possible, and create fluidity between rooms by removing walls that separate the kitchen from the living and dining rooms.

2. Different floors

For the open concept to work in the best way, the ideal is to have the same floor in all spaces, no delimiting the rooms choosing different floors for each one of them, unless this is an extra element of your decoration.

3. Unlimited environments

And speaking of delimiting spaces, one thing is not to separate rooms with different walls or floors, another is not to demarcate the environments in any way, so that we do not know if we are in the living room or in the kitchen, and in this case the function of the spaces are confused.

Even without walls, environments can and should be differentiated through the arrangement of furniture, colors or other decor items, ensuring that each part of the house is put to its best use.

4. Little counter space in the kitchen

Anyone who likes to cook knows that if there is one thing that is lacking in the kitchen, it is not having space to prepare food.

A very common solution pointed out by the brothers it’s having an island or peninsula, which are nothing more than extra bench spaces, usually with cabinets underneath and chairs around them, also serving for storage and quick meals. It is still possible to accommodate the sink or stove on the island, for example.

5. Low right foot

Headroom is the distance between the floor and the ceiling. From the brothers, we learned that the higher he is, the better. If the ceiling in your house is low and raising it is out of the question, one solution is to use light colors and mirrors in the decoration, which give the illusion of spaciousness to the space.

6. Go between the cabinets and the ceiling

Aside from gathering dust, the gap left between cabinets and the ceiling is often useless. The tip then is to fill the space with larger cabinets.

7. Disproportionately sized home appliances

Brushed steel double fridge and built-in electric oven are in almost every project in the world. brothers at work🇧🇷 But if you don’t have these items in the kitchen, that’s fine too. The ideal is to try to make the best use of the space and, if possible, choose more modern and functional appliances when updating yours.

8. Texture on the ceiling

Until the 90s, it was very common to find textures on ceilings like the one in the first photo, the so-called “popcorn”, and some are still among us today. In addition to being considered beautiful at the time, texturing was an easy way to correct imperfections.

If you miss ceiling decoration and want to do something different, the tip of the brothers at work is to use beams or patterns, which help to give a more classic and elegant look to the environment.

9. Small sink in the bathroom

A common priority among Jonathan and Drew’s clients is the double sink, something we rarely see here in Brazil. The idea is that two people in the family can use the bathroom at the same time, without bumping into each other or “fighting” in the mirror. In houses with few bathrooms or large families, the solution is excellent!

10. Not paying attention to bathroom decor

Even if your bathroom doesn’t have a double sink, bathtub and shower space, that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. The brothers are bold in the floor and tiles and make the space, no matter the size, as pleasant and functional as possible, to give the feeling that we are in a spa.

11. Vibrant colored walls

Of course our house has to look like us, so if you like vibrant colors, go for it! It’s okay to use them, the question is how. Painting an entire room lime green is not a good option, according to the brothers.

Opt for objects in bright colors that fit harmoniously into the design. On the walls, prioritize neutral and pastel colors.

12. No accent wall

13. Only one point of light in the center of the living room or kitchen

This is a very common mistake! The twins’ suggestion is simple: have several points of light in the same environment. Thus, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing, it is possible to regulate the brightness of the space.

When choosing chandeliers, remember that there are pieces suitable for each position in the house — a chandelier made to stand over a dining table will not suit a hallway, for example. There is also the possibility of embedding part of the lamps in the ceiling, as in the photo on the right. Use creativity.

14. Backyard bland and of little use

Leaving a patch of cement or grass for dogs and children to run around is not an option for siblings. A space-saving solution that appears in many episodes is the construction of a deck with a barbecue, dining table or lounge chairs, whichever is most useful for the family.

15. Unfinished or underused areas

You know that neglected corner we usually use to store random things? So even this space deserves a special decoration.

By redecorating basements, attics, pantries, laundry rooms and garages, rooms are not only more beautiful, but also more spacious and functional.
