10 Reasons Why the “Bearded Men” Fashion is Taking Over the World

The custom of growing facial hair is certainly not new to the 21st century. From prehistory to Ancient Greece, the use of a beard was a symbol of status and wisdom. During the Middle Ages, the beard represented virility, and the “baby faces” of the priests of the Catholic Church were synonymous with celibacy. Beards have not always been “in fashion”. With commercial and technological development, the beard began to indicate another trait of male vanity. Nowadays, however, this vanity seems to have come back with a vengeance, and not just among bikers and hipsters🇧🇷

we, from awesome.club, we decided to understand what it means to be a modern bearded man. Is the beard just an aesthetic quirk or does it say something about the people who wear it?

1. Bearded men look older and “wiser”

How to add “brutality” to your appearance without trying too hard? Let the beard grow! Research has proven that men with beards are seen as more “manly” and “experienced”. The ancient Greeks already knew this even without scientific experiments: men wore beards as a sign of wisdom.

“I remember my father always had a beard—medium in size, well-groomed and trimmed, like the hipsters of today. One time he came home late at night and went straight to the shower. My mother put me to sleep and then got into bed. My dad still hadn’t gotten out of the shower. When my mother was about to fall asleep, she heard a person open the bedroom door and lie down next to her on the bed. When she turned around, she came face to face with a man with a ‘naked’ face. My mother said she was so startled that she almost screamed for help. Fortunately, she noticed that that man was just my father. After that, he was given an ultimatum never to shave his beard again.” © Froda16 / Pikabu

2. Beards make men look more “masculine”

We know that the concept of masculinity has been gaining new meanings over the years, but bearded men are still often associated with more “aggressive” and “dominating” people. They appear to be stronger and more dangerous compared to men without beards. According to scientists, the hair left on the face conveys a “man’s ability to fight for resources”.

“On the life of the bearded. She was in the mail line. The employee called the supervisor, and they both started looking at a sheet of paper, and then at me. They looked at the paper, and at me. And so 3 times. Then they brought the paper close to my face, and I noticed that it was a picture of some man who was on the run. The supervisor then finally said, “No, it’s not him.’” © russianTrash / Pikabu

3. Reflects your temperament

It’s hard to refute science, which in this case says that the more a man is surrounded by other men, the more tempting it is for him to grow a beard. This is so he can stand out in some way and convey more information about his personality and attitude towards others. Leaving a deep, well-groomed beard can be a sign of slight “carelessness”, but the main idea conveyed is that you care about your appearance. On the other hand, the 3-week “bush” beard, which looks more like a bird’s nest, will certainly cause the “high informality” effect, of someone who doesn’t care much about what others think. If you come across these two types of men, you can make well-founded assumptions about some of the personality traits of each.

“If you have a beard, you are in fashion. I still remember that in the old days it was curious to see a coffee shop attendant with a beard, but nowadays, almost all the attendants have a beard. I’m referring to guys who decided to become more ‘masculine’ overnight, as if a beard was synonymous with virility. I remember a situation in which I saw a very large, bearded young man arguing with a market clerk about the incorrect price of the edible flowers he wanted to buy. Nothing against it, but I still have the urge to think that a man like that shouldn’t even know what edible flowers are. Stereotypes, isn’t it?!” © ibigdan / Facebook

4. Helps to look elegant and informal

Gwilym Pugh worked as an insurance agent. On the advice of his hairdresser, he grew a beard. Shortly thereafter, he applied for a modeling job that he saw on the Internet. He quickly quit his old job and became a professional model. This story went viral web🇧🇷

Having a beard is the simplest way to change your style, just as women are more flexible with their hair. Just having a big beard can transform your image drastically. On the one hand, a beard can give an appearance of greater masculinity and even sensuality, but, on the other hand, there is a risk of characterizing someone as being too careless. Women, in turn, do not have a generalized and unique opinion on the subject, it all depends on the care that each one has with their own beard, whether large or small. The main thing to remember is that the beard should only be a component of your image, and not a “crutch” to mask the imperfections of the face.

“If your day is not good, I advise you to do the following: get in your car, open the windows, turn on some music at the highest volume, start the engine and feel the vibration in the steering wheel. And the best: drive feeling the wind hitting your beard. It will definitely improve your day.” © yngwiebach / Reddit

5. Can attract women

Although the presence of facial hair is not related to testosterone levels, many people are passionate about beards, including many women. Beards and mustaches came into fashion in those times when men fought to conquer their beloved, who were in the minority, and fashion changed according to the relationship of single men and unmarried women. Scientists carried out an experiment: they showed more than 8,000 women photos in which the same man had a “deep”, “short” and “thick beard with a mustache”. The women mostly chose the man who had a dug and short beard.

“The beard hides imperfections and demarcates the beautiful features of the face. When a woman’s fingers meet a very short beard, that’s the moment of contrast between something smooth and something more ‘brute’ and ‘rustic’, opposites that attract. I don’t know why, but in my personal opinion, men with beards seem to be more experienced. Not to mention they seem to be more confident and sensible.” © Tsarevna Stoykova / Quora

6. Warm up in the cold

According to a scientific study, the surface temperature of the skin in the places where the beard grows is higher than in shaved areas, even if it is only a degree of difference. And if you grow a beard long enough, you no longer need to wear a scarf in cold weather. If a guy, however, is trying to win the heart of someone of the opposite sex, the best choice would be to opt for a shorter, well-groomed beard.

“When I let my beard and mustache grow, I noticed how warm it was. Since then, I have grown a beard in the winter season and shaved it in the spring and summer. But then I decided to let it grow all year without cutting. My beard got so big that during the winter it froze and little ice popsicles formed, but that never bothered me. It was actually quite funny to see people react when they looked at my beard, like I was Santa Claus.” © Carl Belken / Quora

7. Bearded men make excellent fathers

The relationship that women have with men’s beards is quite polarized, but over the centuries, many have repeatedly chosen bearded men to be their life companions. Is it exactly the beard that would indicate how a man can be a good father? Bearded men are still perceived as those who will be able to protect and care for their family, even more so than men without beards. Of course, this is just a matter of perception, but that’s the “magic” of having a beard. The theme of “bearded dads” went viral on the Internet, mainly with #BeardedDad, which unites several countries from all over the world. We cannot talk about this topic without mentioning the famous and humorous clip of the Australian band The Beards titled If your father doesn’t have a beard, you have two mothers.🇧🇷

8. A beard makes a man more patient

You can’t have a long, perfect beard in just a few weeks. Beards grow and itch, so you have to take care of them. Due to daily care, man gets used to the fact that nothing in this life appears “out of nowhere”, and that to be successful it is necessary to invest time and a lot of patience. Therefore, bearded men tend to be calmer in high-stress situations.

9. Bearded men are seen as competent experts

Again, it’s all about perception, and bearded men are almost automatically perceived as trustworthy and competent. 200 employees of a company had to look at photos of several candidates, including bearded men, and assess their personality traits. Bearded candidates were mostly characterized as more “captivating”, “confident” and potentially “successful”.

“When I was 23, I was working as a teacher at an arts school for people with disabilities. One of my roles was to lead meetings to determine what would be important to implement in the teaching plan, as well as the school’s goals for the coming year. My ideas, however, did not seem to be taken seriously, as none were accepted by the committee. I talked to my boss about this and to my surprise he said it was probably because I had a ‘baby face’. He suggested that I grow a beard and wear glasses if I had them. Believe it or not, it worked, and now I feel like I really am a part of the decisions that are made. I haven’t shaved my beard since then.” © Rob Young /…
