Sitz bath: all about this ancient and effective method

Sitz bath is an ancient preparation, passed down from generation to generation as a complementary measure for the relief of symptoms (especially itching) in the private parts. It is worth noting, however, that it must be done correctly, preferably under medical supervision, and cannot replace the investigation and proper treatment of the health problem that is causing such symptoms.

What is a sitz bath?

Fabiana Nakano (CRM 107.869), gynecologist at Campinas Reproductive Medicine, explains that sitz bath is the act of staying with the perineal region (intimate part) immersed in water for a few minutes.

According to the gynecologist, this practice can be used as an auxiliary treatment to relieve symptoms such as itching and irritation. “It is a resource that can also be used to treat symptoms in children, since vaginal medication is not used in this public”, she highlights.

How to prepare a sitz bath

  1. It is recommended that you always use clean, preferably boiled, water.
  2. Boil 3 to 4 liters of water;
  3. Let it cool and, when it is warm or natural, place the contents in a basin, high enough to cover the intimate part for a few minutes;
  4. Stay 2 to 3 minutes in the sitz bath;
  5. Dry the area normally with a soft towel.

In some cases, bathing with ingredients other than water may be indicated, however, it is important to always respect the guidelines given by the doctor.

Types of sitz bath

Depending on the diagnosis, the sitz bath can be done, for example, with sodium bicarbonate, chamomile. Some possible indications are:

Sitz bath with sodium bicarbonate

“As an auxiliary treatment, you can use a sitz bath with sodium bicarbonate which, due to its alkaline pH, reduces the acidity of the vagina and makes it unsuitable for the proliferation of fungi, especially Candida”, explains Fabiana.

Sitz bath for candidiasis

In addition to sodium bicarbonate, after confirming the diagnosis of candidiasis, as highlighted by Fabiana, a bath with chamomile tea can be used to relieve itching or even with benzydamine which, as it is anti-inflammatory, reduces local swelling (which can be very annoying).

Sitz bath with chamomile

“Chamomile is known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, which helps relieve itching and irritation caused by vaginal thrush. In addition, it also relieves the symptoms of diaper rash”, explains Fabiana.

The gynecologist adds, however, that the ideal is to know why the itching, but you can use a bath with chamomile to relieve this symptom.

Sitz bath for discharge

One must know which agent is causing the discharge, explains Fabiana, but one can use sitz baths with antiseptic or anti-inflammatory solutions while the diagnosis is not made.

Sitz bath for hemorrhoids

“The ideal is to use medicines with anti-inflammatory and/or healing properties such as benzydamine hydrochloride, potassium permanganate and chamomile tea”, highlights Fabiana.

Sitz bath with apple cider vinegar

According to Fabiana, there are studies showing that apple cider vinegar has antiseptic action in vitro and could be used in some cases of discharge caused by microorganisms that proliferate in an alkaline environment.

It is worth mentioning that the sitz bath should be indicated by the doctor, that is, it is not recommended to take a sitz bath (especially with other ingredients besides water) on its own.

Warnings and Contraindications

Fabiana explains that, to use a sitz bath, it is important to always use clean, preferably boiled, water. “Other important precautions include observing the temperature before sitting; use clean containers and observe the amount of the component and which is indicated for each symptom, it is recommended to always perform it under medical supervision ”, she emphasizes.

“The use of treatments without a previous medical evaluation can delay the diagnosis of the disease and, therefore, the person takes time to perform the appropriate treatment”, adds the gynecologist.

Finally, Fabiana warns: “the sitz bath is used as a complementary treatment and to relieve symptoms and does not dispense with medical monitoring”, he concludes. Enjoy and learn about the risks of vaginal douching.
