10+ Quirky haircuts that were very successful and marked an era

The old family photo album can even make us remember good times, but it is more than that: it also has the power to highlight the fashion of a certain era. Want to know how people dressed during the last century? It is possible that as you leaf through them, you will find out. And also ask yourself, “Why did my mother or grandmother wear this hairstyle?” Or rather, “Why did they cut my hair this way?”

The fact is, this reaction can be quite common, after all, what was cool in the last century, or even the last few decades, might seem too cheesy these days. Times change and fashion follows trends, and haircuts and hairstyles are no exception to the rule.

Therefore, the awesome.club invites you to remember the styles that took over the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Commonly motivated by great personalities, find one that, probably, a relative of yours has already used. (And be sure to check out the bonus at the end of the post).

1. Medium, curly and layered hair (80’s/90’s)

If you lived through the 1980s and early 1990s, you probably remember the curly, high-shouldered “Rambo” style haircut. Sylvester Stallone’s look for the film became a symbol of this hair style and was a hit with both men and women, both in Brazil and around the world.

Proof that the style really was unbeatable. The reproductions could leave something to be desired…

2. No defined cut, long and voluminous (70’s)

The “big hair”, therefore, was not exclusive to Stallone. In the 70s — when the “hairy” wave originated, which would take new forms in the 80s and 90s and reach the present day — while rockers were successful all over the globe and became references, Roberto Carlos was one of the main influencers. in Brazil.

Nowadays, it can be said that the “hairs” are less rebellious, some rockers adept at the style even adhered to the flat iron and hydration, but at the time, the intention was exactly that they would be full and remain voluminous. If you haven’t lived through that time, ask a relative who has lived through it for some photographs. There are high chances to see him with the same or similar hairstyle.

And who knew that the style would also be a trend in weddings?!

3. “Chuquinhas” on top of the head (1980s)

There is no doubt that the queen of the little ones, Xuxa, moved children’s fashion in Brazil with her trends. At the height of her TV show, in the 80s, it was very common to see children and teenagers reproducing the presenter’s clothes and hairstyles, among them, one that became one of her trademarks: the “chuquinha”, hairstyle in which she tied half her hair (or even all of it) in a ponytail high on her head. If you were a kid in the 1980s, chances are you know very well what we’re talking about.

Yeah… but when doing so, it’s worth remembering that the intention is to keep the “chuquinha” on top of the head

Despite the short blond hair being characteristic of Xuxa, another hairstyle used by the presenter (who poses to the right of Angelica in the image above), popular in the mid-1970s, won the minds of many women at the time. The somewhat long strands purposely marked to cause frizz have also been showcased in the hair of personalities such as Demi Moore and Daryl Hannah. Try to find out how many women in your family have gone through this phase, you can bet there weren’t a few.

However, we hope they have remembered that even frizz must have its limits.

5. Hair — a lot — voluminous and extravagant (80’s)

Speaking of Angelica, the actress and presenter also had her glory days. In the 80s, she took on the hair in a voluminous and extravagant way, using combing techniques so that the blonde curls gained body and were really armed. At the time, volume was the trend of the time, and anything was needed to achieve it, from the use of hairspray to the perm, which was a hit with celebrities. The fashion lasted until the following decade, when it came to straight hair, which gained strength in the early 2000s onwards.

With luck, we would look like Angelica, but for very little, we could be too feathered

6. “Tupete” style “smudge” (2000s)

According to Extra, the haircut that Ronaldo sported during the 2002 Football World Cup was a strategy to shift attention away from his physical condition a few weeks before the games. And didn’t it work very well?!

Which person who lived in the 2000s doesn’t remember the “topete” style “cascão” that several Brazilian children and soccer lovers adopted at the time, especially after the Brazilian team was world champion that year? The player’s eccentric hairstyle was so symbolic that even today, some footballers and fans adhere to the fashion that took over barbershops a few years ago.

Could this be the progeny of Ronaldo’s cut?

Following the line of the previous decade, in the 80s rockers kept their hair long, “badly cut” and full of ends, but the difference between them and other hairy people was that the unkempt appearance of the wires was nothing more than a mere appearance. The truth is that Glam Rock, the style of the time, had a lot of glamour, and a great exponent of that was Jon Bon Jovi, the leader of the rock band Bon Jovi.

In Brazil, the musical style was on a different track, so the cut may not have gained so much strength among rockers, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t drool over the big hair of foreign rock stars from the 80’s.

The only precaution, therefore, should be with the ends of the hair. They could decide to defy gravity…

In the 60s, the moptop style, very similar to the one commonly called in Brazil as “cabelo tigelinha” or “cuia”, reached its apogee along with the career of its greatest exponents: The Beatles. The Liverpool boys named the cut, which became known as the “Beatles Cut”. It was worn with rather long hair, with long sideburns, below the ears and with a fringe across the forehead.

The look was all the rage at the time, and many people tried to look like John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and Paul McCartney. Even in the 2000s, children from all over Brazil, especially boys, used the “bowl” cut, and if you were surrounded by them at the time, you may well remember.

9. Flattop or square hair (70’s)

Will Smith’s trademark cut dates back to the American suburbs in the 1970s. It was also trendy in the 1980s and 1990s, and the only change, therefore, was the size of the millimeter-perfect square that was in over the head. In fact, this seems to be one of those timeless styles, which never go out of style, since decades after its peak, it continues to be a tremendous success, both in Brazil and in the rest of the world. And, we must agree, he is full of personality!

The problem is when you decide to improvise…

10. Mullets (80s)

From rockers to country people, there was no one who could resist the fashion of mullets, the 80s hairstyle that was marked in Brazil with the duo Chitãozinho and Xororó. Shorter and ruffled at the front of the hair, and longer at the back, these were the parameters of what may have been one of the most famous haircuts to have existed in the past.

If we could point to a style that would certainly be in almost every old photo album in Brazil, it would certainly be this one. And, without a doubt, one factor that helped in its popularity were the dozens of variations it could present: long, full, ruffled and even with braids…

It is worth remembering: even if we are not used to certain styles, tastes are personal and we are all free to choose what we want, after all, the important thing is to be happy in the way we choose best.

Bonus: if you thought the infamous Undercut was an invention of this era, we have news for you…
