Young women are drinking as much as men, says survey –

For much of the last century, alcohol consumption was almost exclusively a problem for men. But that has changed. Women not only started drinking beer, wine and vodka, but also reached the male gender in the consumed dosages – even when it comes to excesses. And who points this out is a research recently published in the scientific journal BMJ Open.

The survey deserves respect: 68 studies conducted between 1948 and 2014 involving more than 4 million people were reviewed. The scientists analyzed the participants’ history of alcohol dependence, the period in which they consumed alcoholic beverages and other alcohol-related problems. Volunteers were divided according to how often and how they had drinks.

The results showed that, over time, in all groups, the difference in alcohol consumption between men and women practically ceased to exist: women are drinking as much as men. And this was even more evident among those born around the 1980s – many of these women drink even more alcohol than the opposite sex.

For the authors of the study, these findings show that alcohol abuse also needs to be observed among women and that awareness campaigns should not be directed only at men. And let it be clear: no one is saying that you shouldn’t have that beer at happy hour or a drink at the club. You can go out and enjoy the night with friends, yes. Just be careful not to overdo it.
