Yellow September: know what it is and understand its importance

yellow september is a campaign that has been running since 2014 across the country and aims to raise awareness of the importance of suicide prevention🇧🇷

Throughout the month of September, it is common to see public and private spaces decorated and/or illuminated in yellow. The period was chosen because September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day🇧🇷

With Yellow September, the idea is to promote events that make room for debates on suicide, in addition to publicizing the topic and alerting the population about the importance of its discussion.

Nowadays, suicide is a public health problem in Brazil and its occurrence has grown among young people. According to official figures, 32 Brazilians kill themselves every day. This rate is higher than that of victims of AIDS and most types of cancer.

“It has been a silent illness, as people avoid the subject and, out of fear or lack of knowledge, do not see the signs that a person close to them has suicidal thoughts. The hope is the fact that, according to the World Health Organization, nine out of ten cases could be prevented. It is necessary for the person to seek help and attention from those around him“, explains the official website of the campaign.

Yellow September has the support of the Center for Valorization of Life (CVV), the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) and the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry (ABP). Worldwide, the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) also participates in the dissemination of the project.
