Witch Wand – My 101 How to Own, Craft & Use a Wand | Welcome to Wicca now

Hello my dears and welcome to Magic Magic. Recently I’ve covered an eclectic range of topics such as Ostara, candle magic, this abundance spell, and most recently a topic that many of you have expressed great interest in, witch altars. I wrote a post with tips on setting up your own witch altar and a post on common altar decorations. As I was writing these posts, I realized that I hadn’t talked about one of the most well-known witch tools, namely witch wands!

While this seems like something popularized by movies (I’m looking at you Harry Potter), witch wands are a commonly used tool that many practitioners will incorporate into their practice.

Today I want to answer some common questions about witch wands and how to use them, as well as give you some tips on how to make your own wand and what materials you might want to use. So let’s get started!

The History of the Witch Wands

It is speculated that wands were associated with Stone Age paintings for a very long time, showing figures holding wand-like objects. It is believed that the figures in these paintings were leaders, with the wands representing their position of power.

Fun fact: At certain official ceremonies in Britan, special officers are permitted to wear a “wand of office” that represents the power they hold.

Charles FitzRoy, second Duke of Grafton, carries the thin white baton of Lord Chamberlain.

Surprisingly, written records of witches’ wands exist as early as 1200 AD when wands were mentioned in a Latin book called The Oathbound Book of Honorius. Many of the ideas in this book formed the basis of the better known The Key of Solomon, written in the 16th century and a popular resource for occultists ever since. The 1888 version (which was eventually translated into English) inspired modern Wicca founder Gerald Gardner to incorporate wands into his own practice.

This is a pentagram found in the Key of Solomon manuscripts. It is amazing how much this book has influenced modern occultists.

What is a witch’s wand and how do witches use it?

Witch wands are used to channel and direct magical energy. They are believed to contain gentle power, often used to invite and encourage rather than command. Witch wands represent both the air and fire elements and are often used to cast circles for rituals and spells.

If you read my previous post on altars you will know that it is important to have a balance between male and female on your altar. Due to its phallic nature, a witch’s wand is considered a male tool along with the anthame. These two tools have fairly similar uses, with the main difference being the power of their powers. Anthames Command, Encourage Wands.

Witch Wand vs Anthame, choose wisely what energy you draw and direct.

When incorporating any of these tools into your practice, think about what you want to achieve and with how much force you want to achieve it. For example, witch wands are generally used when attempting to summon spirits because it’s best to invite them rather than order them to participate.

What does a magic wand symbolize?

A wand is a symbol of a witch’s power and is seen as an extension of the witch using it. It is also a symbol of masculine power and the air and fire elements. Because of its stronger association with the air element, it is a symbol of communication, logic, and intellect.

Much like a hot air balloon, a wand is both air and fire.

What is a witch’s wand made of?

Witch wands can be made from any material that you feel drawn to. Traditionally they are made of wood, with different woods making wands that can be used for different aspects of magic. A willow staff, for example, is an excellent wand for healing magic.

Wands can also be made out of crystal, plastic, metal, stone, or anything else you’re attracted to.

Many people choose to make their own witch wands because they have the opportunity to decorate and shape the wand into something that feels powerful to them. Crafting your own wand also establishes a connection between you and the wand that will help you cast more powerful spells. What you decorate with your wand can increase the power or intent of the wand. So always make sure you do everything in an informed and intentional way. More on that below.

What is the best wood for a witch’s wand?

Different woods hold different energies and this is something you should consider when choosing the wood to use in your wand. As I said this, however, I found that going out and finding a branch or stick that draws me to it forms a stronger bond than simply walking on wood.

If you love the beach, next time you’re there, grab some pieces of driftwood and see if you have one of them in your hand. If yes, then you have found the wood for your magic wand! The same goes for the forest, the bush or wherever you find your wand.

When trying to find wood for your wand, always remember to cause as little damage as you possibly can when harvesting it. If you want to take a specific branch, don’t just rip it off the tree, as this will instantly imbue your new wand with negative energy (violence is never the way). Only look for fallen branches or branches that are already damaged in some way. If you have a garden and you prune your fruit trees, you can use one of the pruned branches as a beautiful magic wand.

When you prune, cut, or find wood or branches for a wand, you should thank the tree for giving you the wood. It’s a really nice way to acknowledge that nature has taken care of you again and also give thanks for the sacrifice or gift of the tree.
