James Baldwin was an American novelist, playwright, essayist, poet, and activist.

Baldwin was born in New York in 1924. He had a difficult childhood, growing up in poverty and spending much of his early years caring for his younger siblings.

As a young James Baldwin he discovered his passion for writing, and in 1937, at the age of 13, he wrote his first article entitled Harlem Then and Now, which was published in his school journal.

At the age of 24, James Baldwin moved to Paris. In 1970 he settled in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France, where he died in 1987.
