Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves show how it is possible to maintain a healthy friendship in Hollywood

Sometimes the world of the famous can be a little ungrateful, but certain lasting friendships still make us believe that not everything that Hollywood puts together can tear apart. Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves are one of the great examples. True icons of the 90s, the two have already worked together on three films and share a beautiful friendship that has been going on for more than 30 years.

The two stars met in the late 1980s at one of the first Independent Spirit Awards, held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, when they presented an award together. “It wasn’t televised. Buck Henry was the emcee and we gave him the award for Best Supporting Actor,” commented Ryder.

In 2009, during an interview, the actress reinforced that from the first meeting, the connection between the two was instantaneous. “I’ve known Keanu since I was 16, so he’s like a brother to me.” Before that, they already had several friends in common, but it was after this event that they started hanging out together.

Ryder helped his friend get a role in the movie Dracula

In the early 1990s, after giving up working on The Godfather III, the actress showed Francis Ford Coppola the script James V. Hart had written for a new film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula (1897).

Coppola agreed to direct the horror film and Ryder suggested his friend for the supporting role of Jonathan Harker. At the time, the director preferred Ryder’s boyfriend Johnny Depp for the role, but the studio wanted a bigger star, and Reeves was eventually cast.

During the filming of the movie Dracula, the muse had some difficult moments behind the scenes as her scenes proved to be quite complicated, and she had a hard time getting along with her co-star, actor Gary Oldman. It was Reeves who helped her through this darkest phase of her career, as she revealed to Vanity Fair in 2018.

“I have these journals and I just took one out recently, and it was from the time of Dracula.” She explained that one entry read: “Anguish, distress, distress, distress, thank God for Keanu. Thank God I’m going to see Keanu.” She continued, “I was always so happy when he was around.” The heartthrob’s way of demonstrating that the friendship was reciprocal was by writing letters to Ryder.

In Dracula, Ryder and Reeves’ characters exchange rings in one scene, but may have technically gotten married in real life as well. Years after the film was released, the star said that the ceremony was performed by a real priest. “Winona says we are . Coppola too. So I think we’re married,” Keanu said.

The Stranger Things star refers to the heartthrob as her “husband”: “Every now and then, I get a text, which says ‘Hello, husband,’” she said. “I didn’t really believe her, and then Francis Ford Coppola, the director of Dracula, got in touch with Winona and said publicly that, yes, it actually happened, the priest did a full ceremony and Winona and I got married.”

After starring together in A Scanner Darkly (2006) and their separate appearances in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee in 2009, it was nearly a decade before the actors got together once again to promote the romantic comedy, With Who Will It Be? (2018).

During the promotion of the film, both assumed that they once had a crush on each other. Ryder revealed that when she first met Reeves in the late ’80s, she “had a really big, healthy crush on him.” The John Wick star felt exactly the same way explaining, “I also had a big, healthy passion for.”

It was also during the promotions of Com Quem Sera? that the public learned, through the actress, that her friendship with Reeves has lasted for “more than thirty years”. Still during an interview, she confessed that the star is one of her “favorite” people. “To work. To be around.” Reeves intervened, saying, “I feel the same way about you.”

Listing the attributes he loves about Ryder, Reeves also said, “Good friend. Sense of humor. Smart mind. World view. Cute heart. Beautiful spirit. And a great actress.” How beautiful, isn’t it?

“My hope is to make many more films with him,” suggested Winona. Reeves nodded and began to come up with ideas for imaginary future projects they could do: “Could we do horror, a political thriller?
