Why Xuxa only wore boots and 7 other curiosities about her memorable costumes

The clothes that the presenter wore on Xou da Xuxa were created by a team, which sought elements in haute couture at the time. The renowned stylists Jean-Paul Gautier (photo), Christian Lacroix and the Italian Franco Moschino served as inspiration, as well as Xuxa’s own ideas. The creators of the costumes defend that the clothes were surrealistic.

Willis Ribeiro worked with the presenter from 1986 to 2001, and also produced his creations on top of what didn’t work, since some costumes were not approved by Xuxa or by Marlene Mattos, director of the attraction. Xuxa didn’t like the color purple, but she used everything. To present the program, she dressed in 759 different ways, without repeating any look.

The costumes were playful and generated a lot of identification in the children. She played with proportions, hair and different colors, which was modern for the time. The presenter’s collection contains more than one hundred boots and there are projects to make an exhibition open to the public with the pieces.

Xuxa drew the models she used on TV and her daughter Sasha was able to witness this. In addition to liking fashion, she influenced the public. The hair clip called “xuxinha” may have been inspired by the presenter’s look.

The presenter’s style can be seen in iconic figures such as Hebe Camargo, who ”dressed as Xuxa” when receiving the presenter on her show, in 1989. The Brazilian stylist Michelly X, who works with several celebrities, has in the presenter a huge inspiration. “I learned to sew by myself and made replicas of the looks she wore for a dance group in the 1980s.”

The artist is passionate about boots. She used several models, but the white ones became one of her symbols. “My foot rests in the boot. Flip-flops and sneakers don’t do it,” she said in an interview. The artist believes that she once owned more than 2,000 boots.

“As a child, I couldn’t buy a boot. My mother made one. The first was a green suede model, with several fringes”. Years later she got a model from her daughter Sasha Which reminded him of the first one. “It was just like my first boot, only it was brown.”

The unforgettable moments when she got out of her pink spaceship to the sound of “Xuxa’s friend” had a more special magic in programs like Natal, which had luxurious costumes and full of details.

On these occasions, the presenter also made room for other guests and there was a mixture of music and acting, as in the special Fábrica de Ilusões, when she played the character Moleque, dressing as a boy.

Earrings can add a special touch to any outfit. And Xuxa’s costumes used creativity to put a dash of charm on the artist’s ears. At Christmas, the earring was in the shape of a toy and to match the sports cap, nothing better than an accessory that also imitates a cap. Interesting, isn’t it?!
