Why the same piece of clothing can turn your friend into Beauty and you into the Beast

Hi! I’m Carina, I’m 31 years old and my friend is called Marina and she’s 37 years old. We are almost the same weight and height, have similar tastes and adopt the same styles when it comes to fashion. Therefore, the age difference (six years) is barely noticeable. I do, however, have two problems: I sometimes look chubby and older than my friend, and I’ve recently realized that I have a dull wardrobe that doesn’t really enhance my true self.

Marina and I invited a stylist to carry out an experiment and prove to the readers of awesome.club that there are no ugly women; what there are are those who have not yet identified their own style. We share, in this post, many photos and, in the end, a bonus that made even the store attendants cry with laughter.

How did the idea for the experiment come about?

Marina on the left, me on the right

I’m a person who doesn’t follow fashion trends, but wants to look cool and interesting. It happens that very often I am enchanted by a piece, but when I try it on, I look like a jerk. As for the hairstyle, I also suffer a lot. I have straight hair, the dream of many women, but I always found it boring… my dream has always been to make an extraordinary transformation in it. So even if I could fix the clothes part, there would still be the hair.

My friend and I had already published a post about American stylist David Kibbe and his style classification — a system improved by Dwin Larson. I was curious to find out what my profile would be. Dramatic, Romantic, Natural, Gamine or other. This style remains unchanged regardless of age or weight. By identifying your profile, it is possible to define the most relevant makeup, hairstyle and clothing styles. Every detail counts and influences the look.

In Kibbe’s classification, “pure” profiles (not influenced by others) are extremely rare, which can make it difficult to choose between 16 combinations. I did several quick tests, compared myself to celebrities who seemed to have the same profile as me, I read all the profile descriptions many times, but I didn’t come to a conclusion about what my standard would be, after all. My appearance has different traits, so I get different results than cataloged.

The goal in this whole process was to discover my profile and stop spending money on clothes that ruin my look. As author of awesome.club, I felt obliged to do the following experiment, in order to verify how the same piece produces different looks on people with different profiles. And as not always the clothes you love are ideal for you.

In the table above, to achieve the desired effect, it is important to learn to distinguish the clothes of items 2 and 3. In my specific case, I have a lot of clothes I like (actually half of my wardrobe), but that don’t suit me well (quadrant 2).

Strictly speaking, anyone can try to determine their own profile, read the tips (various texts, videos and tests are available for free on the Internet) and put them into practice.

Keeping that idea in mind, I called in a stylist to ensure the accuracy of the experiment results. I met Cristina (the professional in this area who helped me) through hashtags on Instagram. We carried out the practical tests and asked her to evaluate, through the photos, whether the look we had chosen was suitable or not.

It is worth mentioning that we identified our profile using information available for free, without resorting to Cristina’s help before the beginning of the experiment.

We have many similar characteristics, but what counts when choosing clothes is the dominant trait.

Our casual style, before the experiment

We found out that my profile is Gamine Dramatic and Marina’s profile is Dramatic Natural. The profile indicated first prevails; that is, we follow both common tips and specific recommendations. Before starting the test, I noticed some details that wouldn’t suit either of us🇧🇷

low-contrast clothing; smooth rounded lines; soft and fluffy fabrics; ruffles and small prints; bright makeup.

Already the colorful pieces in layers and with geometric prints would look good on both.

We spent 4.5 hours trying on clothes to come to an important conclusion

In order to carry out our experiment, we went to a store with a wide variety of clothes. But there was one unforeseen—they didn’t sell shoes. However, that didn’t stop us. It was an overlooked detail.

It is worth emphasizing that none of us intends to be a style icon or a fashion reference. Therefore, we decided that there would be no looks inspired by professional models or branded items. Our goal was to show how the same piece would look on two women with similar body shapes, but different profiles.

1.

two.

O look above is my favorite. I call it the “peasant look”. It’s a dress with folds of chiffon and flowers. Interestingly, neither Marina nor I managed to define what was wrong with our choice: obviously, the piece did not match our profile, but why this happened remained an enigma.

3.

I avoid buying boat neck shirts as they don’t fit me well. However, I didn’t imagine that shortened and striped shirts would be the right choice. We also found that the dark but saturated color looks great in Marina.

4.

A style we had never chosen before was surprisingly perfect on both of us. On the other hand, a short dress, which is more relevant to the “Gamine” profile, distorted my friend’s appearance, as well as causing discomfort.

5.

Marina believed that bright colors and bold combinations would not be suitable for her age, but the result surprised us. As for jeans, we feel good wearing pants skinny no faded marks. We noticed that the wider piece gave us a fuller look.

6.

In general, I enjoyed trying on clothes that I would never have chosen of my own accord, but which ended up fitting my profile well — and that was the case. I had to convince my friend to try on the burgundy blouse above. Marina didn’t like the color or the style, but the result was really impressive — the piece definitely refreshed your look!

7.

After the successful tests above, I started a string of failures. I really liked the little monkey above and probably would have bought the part. But I conclude that she made me look like an older sister who wore her younger sister’s outfit. On the right is Marina dressed according to her profile, while my look looks ridiculous.

8.

Two weeks earlier, I had stopped by the store pictured above and found a pleated skirt that I really liked. But during our test it became clear that she wouldn’t suit me well. At the same time, Marina wore pieces that she didn’t like and that, in fact, didn’t look good on her.

9.

Here, I got it right. Two pieces that I liked and that suited me well. I imagined the black would make my appearance more aggressive, but the contrast did the look good. Meanwhile, Marina said she would never have chosen a green dress.

10.

Our initial objective was to choose looks without having to resort to the stylist’s recommendations. Thus, it would be clear whether it would be possible to trust the information from the Internet and successfully apply it in practice. Cristina took a look at our looks and came to the following conclusions:

You only managed to nail it a few times. The choice of pieces for the Marina in photo № 7 was very smart. The off-the-shoulder sweater looks great on the Natural profile and the angled patterns on the Dramatic. Leather pants also emphasize the Dramatic’s dominant feature. The black leather jacket, which highlighted the look, suited the two of you, as you both have the traits of the Dramatic profile. At the same time, I would advise Carina to choose looks in the same line as photo № 1, which make the silhouette appear divided into two parts: the upper part has a different color than the lower part, which adds harmony to the Gamine profile.

In other words, we still have a lot to learn. I still need to read more about it to improve my style. The important thing, however, is that I’ve already “changed a level”, paying more attention to details that previously went unnoticed.

Bonus

Tired, but in a good mood, we decided to end our experiment by trying on clothes that didn’t match our profiles at all. It worked: the store attendants burst out laughing.

Conclusions and tips

Half of my wardrobe is inappropriate to my profile and the other half consists of pieces that don’t match each other. But I realized the main mistake: buying clothes separately, the idea of putting together a capsule wardrobe went unnoticed (but it shouldn’t). If you want to analyze your profile without stylists, it’s best to ask your husband or a friend (of course, as long as you have fashion notions) to evaluate your face and body features. To throw selfies in the dressing room is not such a silly idea as it sounds. After the experiment, I would take a trip. To choose what to bring, I decided to try a method that I found effective: took selfies wearing clothes that I intended to put in my luggage and only then did I choose only those that suited me well.
