In the film industry, there is the phenomenon called “twin films”. Sometimes, in the same year or a few years apart, productions that are very similar in terms of setting, plot, main idea and character appearance can be released. It’s hard to say whether this is often because one writer is trying to replicate another’s success, or because society needs more films on the same subject.
O awesome.club reviewed many movies and unearthed several others with similarities to each other, which can easily confuse you.
Equilibrium and Equals
The name of the film Equilibrium comes from Latin and means “equal”, but this is not the only similarity with the drama Equals, whose translation into Portuguese is “equals”. In both, the action takes place in a future, where perfect people live who cannot, or should not, experience emotions. But feelings are suddenly awakened in each of the main characters.
Autumn in New York and Sweet November
These films were released with a small time difference: Autumn in New York, in 2000 and Sweet November, in 2001. In both, the protagonist finds the love of his life, but happiness ends up being fleeting, because his loved ones receive the diagnosis of an incurable disease.
Lost on Mars and Into the Unknown
Both The Martian and Into the Unknown talk about a space trip to Mars, in which something went wrong and the protagonists must survive alone. In one of the films, Matt Damon’s character is fighting for survival on the Red Planet, and in the other, the main character, played by Mark Strong, is trying to get there.
The Return and Seeking Revenge
The protagonists of both films, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Pierce Brosnan, are trying to survive under harsh conditions of starvation and wild nature. It is in acting and emotional experiences that these cinematographic works resemble each other.
Fifty Shades of Gray and After
The main character in one novel is called Anastasia, and in the other, Tessa. Both study philology and meet incredibly attractive and arrogant men. However, in Fifty Shades of Grey, he is a successful businessman, and in After, a rebel and bully. That’s because the second film is aimed at a younger audience.
Dante and Volcano’s Inferno: The Fury
The plots of these two films are based on a volcanic eruption that threatens the lives of local residents. In both Dante’s Inferno and Volcano: The Fury, the battle against the wrath of nature is shown through the eyes of one family.
The Glass Castle and Captain Fantastic
Both dramas talk about the life of a large family far from civilization. While in The Glass Castle the main character is a girl who moves to New York, whose childhood was spent in an isolated place, in Captain Fantastic the hermit family departs for the great world. In each of the films, the father figure is very important. The two stories also unite by approaching the relationship between parents and children and by the search for the border between the dream and the real world.
Suddenly 30 and I want to be Big
Both teenagers, a 13-year-old girl (De Sudden 30) and a 12-year-old boy (I want to be Big), dream of adulthood, wishing for it as soon as possible, and suddenly, that wish comes true. Both comedies talk about the adventures of the protagonists after suddenly becoming adults.
Armageddon and Deep Impact
Armageddon and Deep Impact are disaster movies. They were filmed in the same year, 1998, and have a common plot: the entire population of the planet is threatened by a space rock that is heading towards Earth at great speed. While in Armageddon the threat is an asteroid, in Deep Impact it is a comet. A team of hero astronauts must prevent the collision.
Batman Begins and Iron Man
Here you can find coincidences in the main characters. Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Tony Stark (Iron Man) are billionaires who fight evil using technological devices. So Bruce and Tony create a heroic alter ego and a new personality, with their own hands: in both films, they make their own super-powered costumes. In addition, in both, they are betrayed by their mentors, Henri Ducard and Obadiah Stane.
The Big Trick and The Illusionist
Both are mystery dramas involving magicians, with unexpected twists. In both cases, the action takes place in the 19th century: The Great Trick, in England and The Illusionist, in Austria. The films are also often confused for their plots focusing on a charismatic magician with a charming assistant.
Fargo: A Comedy of Errors and a Simple Plan
A criminal investigation story involving big money, arrests and chases. Both Fargo: A Comedy of Errors and A Simple Plan take place amidst a lot of snow. Furthermore, the appearance and even the costumes of the main characters are very similar.

Edge of Tomorrow and Time’s Edge are sci-fi versions of the movie A Spell of Time, in which a soldier wakes up to experience the same moments over and over again. The Hunger Games and Battle Royale
Perhaps everyone has heard of the cinematic universe of The Hunger Games, in which teenagers must fight each other. Twelve years before the release of the first action, the Japanese film Battle Royale was released, inspired by the novel of the same name: Koushun Takami. In it, randomly chosen students play a survival game on an abandoned island.
