Annukka Lindell, a professor of neuropsychology at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, found that most people prefer to show their left side in photos. She analyzed two thousand selfies on Instagram to understand why we perceive this side of the face as the most interesting.

The researcher found that people also prefer to show the left side when taking mirror selfies. When a person poses in front of a mirror and takes a picture of their reflection, the image is automatically inverted. Thus, showing the right side in selfies taken in the mirror means that the person actually posed with the left side facing the mirror.

Painted portraits show the same asymmetrical preference: people opt for the left cheek. The researcher believes that this fact may reflect the unconscious desire to show the left cheek, which is the most attractive.

The researcher suggests that the left side of the face is more emotionally expressive. This can be explained by the way feelings are processed by the brain. The right side of the brain, which controls the muscles on the left side of the body, dominates emotions. That’s why people intuitively show their left cheek when asked to pose for a more emotional photo, and show their right when they want to hide their feelings.
