Why Casa 1, LGBT shelter, is still at risk of closing

Opened in 2016, the House 1 is an important shelter for LGBT people in São Paulo. The place is also worth mentioning for being a cultural center, with socio-educational actions aimed at the population. In March, however, came the news that the house could close its doors due to financial problems.

Currently, there are “20 residents and residents residing in the place, 100 people in street situations who receive clothes and personal hygiene products per day, 42 children daily in the cultural center and another 350 people in socio-educational courses and activities”, which makes the news even more worrying.

This fear that the space will end its activities is recurrent, mainly because the institution needs BRL 80,000 monthly, so that the rent for the reception units can be paid and the bills, such as water, which reaches BRL 5 thousand, suppressed.

The sad news was given by Iran Giusticreator of Casa 1, through social networks.

To keep the enclosure in full operation, Iran explained to MdeMulher that, until 2018, 60% of the money raised was through donations from individuals, while 30% came from partnerships with companies and 10% came out of his own pocket. However, this scenario of union for the maintenance of Casa 1 underwent a serious change with the beginning of the new governments – that of Jair Bolsonaro as president, the João Doria as governor of São Paulo and that of Bruno Covas as mayor.

“With the election of Bolsonaro, companies disappeared. With the management of Dória and Bruno Covas came uncertainties in relation to public notices and also the scrapping of public social assistance services: this year alone, two reception centers and a public cafeteria, for example, have already closed”, pointed out the project’s creator .

The lack of partnerships and the instability of government resources for the full operation of the project made it necessary to establish a target of BRL 80,000 in recurring funding, that is, the money collected every month.

For the happiness of the LGBT fight, the value was reached and will allow all bills to be paid, in addition to employees registered under the CLT regime, and also that there will be cash flow. With this, the forecast is that the site will remain open until 2020.

Even so, you need to have your feet on the ground and know that the fight for the survival of the place is constant. Iran was emphatic about the uncertainty that these donations will really continue to happen in the coming months, in order to manage to overcome the deficits caused by the government. He also doesn’t know if the contacts made by the companies that were interested in the initiative, after the intense publicity that began to take place on Casa 1’s social networks, will leave the paper and become reality.

So we asked Iran about a practical solution for how people can contribute to keeping the place open. “With 10 reais a month in our crowdfunding. It’s better 10 people donating 10 reais than one donating 100, because if two or three people stop signing we still have money to keep playing”.

To facilitate monthly donations, registration is done entirely online. After filling in the personal data, the donor must choose how the amount will be debited: by paypal or credit card. In addition to having the possibility to contribute directly by bank transfer. Those who contribute with the amount of R$ 150 will receive at home, monthly, an art made by an LGBT artist.
