Setting the deadline printed on the product packaging is not a matter of simple assumption. “A cosmetic out of expiration date it can lose its properties and, with that, the actives simply stop working”, explains dermatologist Juliana Viesi, from Curitiba. Some of these substances oxidize or undergo different types of chemical reactions, causing allergies and dermatitis in the skin and scalp. And when this region is irritated, it generates inflammation and even falls!

But be aware of other signs (in addition to the label) that indicate the right time to throw the product in the trash. “Keep an eye out for changes in color, odor, consistency and texture”, warns dermatologist Valéria Marcondes, from São Paulo. In any sign of alteration, the expert says that the best solution is to stop using it.

Follow these tips to keep your favorite cosmetics well for longer – contact with air, sun and even handling accelerates their aging: store them in places that don’t suffer a great variation in temperature and humidity and always keep them well closed.
