What happens to your body if you drink a glass of wine a day

Some studies have shown that drinking red wine daily is good for the body because it helps eliminate toxins and improves brain function. To assess in practice whether these studies make sense, we decided to carry out a practical test.

Day 1 of the experiment.

I’m 28 and I wouldn’t say I’m a heavy drinker. Once or twice a week, usually Friday or Saturday, I go out with friends and drink in bars or at parties. Sometimes I make arrangements with someone for a midweek beer.

For the experiment, I decided that for a month I would have a glass of wine every night at dinner. For this, I chose a good Chilean dry red wine (according to researchers and doctors, dry wine has a positive influence on the body).

Day after day I observed a series of changes in my body and in my mood. Some surprised me. Let’s get to the details:

1. Problems related to sleep

I don’t have insomnia problems and I usually go to bed at 11 pm. Just on days 2 and 3 of the experiment, I started having sleep problems: I would suddenly wake up during the night and couldn’t sleep anymore. After 10-15 minutes of looking at the phone, I fell asleep. As the end of the experiment approached, sleep normalized and these problems disappeared. Maybe my body was going through an adaptation process.

I think alcohol influenced my sleep cycles.

2. After the end of the experiment, I found it more difficult to concentrate

I tried to observe any kind of change with my health and well being. Every day I measured my blood pressure and I can say with certainty that alcohol did not affect the indicators at all and my blood pressure remained normal. Also, I didn’t notice shortness of breath or any other breathing problem.

But one thing was evident, something that might seem strange: as soon as I stopped drinking wine every night a drowsiness and a strange weakness took hold of me, and I started to feel more difficult at work. I don’t know if it’s all related or not, I just hope these symptoms go away quickly.

3. Feeling of guilt

I had never felt anything like this, but during the experiment, I noticed that I felt very thirsty during the night. I had to adapt to this new situation and always leave a glass of water beside the bed.

Furthermore, I started to feel ashamed, as if I was doing something wrong, especially in the first few days. Maybe that’s just because I only drink on weekends and with friends, never alone.

The experiment made every night turned into a friday night with good wine. Little by little I came to realize that I didn’t have to live this feeling of guilt, since I could end the experiment whenever I wanted. It was when I understood this that I started to relax and enjoy more glasses of wine during dinner.

4. End of unnecessary meetings

During the period, meetings to drink beer disappeared. I started to stay at home, where I received my friends. At the end, I started to be only with interesting and close people, people I love to receive at home. In addition, I started to go more often to cultural events. I think it’s important to mention that I’m an introverted person and generally prefer to stay at home or in a warm, familiar environment.

I also need to add that the weekend get-togethers with my friends continued. In those moments, I drank beer, not wine, but very little.

5. Skin problems

As I started to stay at home more and eat more dinner, I gained weight. Unfortunately, drinking alcohol daily — even for a short time — affects our appearance. My sleep was altered, I had dark circles under my eyes and some inflammation on my face.

The initial idea was for the experiment to last a month, but I decided to end it after 3 weeks.🇧🇷 Despite some positive aspects, the changes in my health and appearance started to bother me.

Conclusions about the experiment:

Having a glass of good wine at home every now and then is clearly cheaper than going out for drinks at the bar. Plus, you’re much less likely to get drunk and do something stupid. At home, we usually relax and don’t desperately wait for Friday to arrive.
End of some boring and pointless encounters: As I am an introverted woman, this was super positive.
I wanted to learn more about wines and cheeses. These dinners turned into very pleasant and tasty moments. I realized that even the consumption of small amounts can affect our health: I was worried about sleep-related problems, weakness and the unhealthy appearance of my face.

Perhaps the main conclusion is that it is not worth drinking every day, but there is no need to wait for a special day to drink and relax if a person feels mentally tired. A good wine and good company are the best way to make an evening more pleasant. The important thing is to know when to stop, so that these good times are always remembered fondly.
