“In the real world, when we are awake, sex is how we create life. When we have dreams, we use sex as a metaphor to bring a new idea to life,” explains psychologist and dream expert Ian Wallace.

Sexual dreams rarely represent a physical union, according to dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg. You can also dream about sex if there is a psychological or emotional connection that you need, or that you recently had with another person. “Maybe you connected somehow in a conversation,” Loewenberg says.

“The nature of sex is about connecting,” he continued. “They are two separate bodies that connect with each other and become one. It is the ultimate union.”

But dreaming about your childhood piano teacher doesn’t mean you want to have sex with him, but rather “about some aspect that person symbolizes for you,” he said.

One of the most common sexual dreams is having sex with your boss, according to Wallace. A boss “is someone who has the power and authority to make something happen,” he said, ideal qualities for bringing a new idea to life.

How about a sexual dream with a family member? “This is one that a lot of people won’t admit,” Loewenberg said.

Yeah you dream of having sex with your father, something common, according to Loewenberg, don’t worry. “It’s really more about what a father represents,” she said. Maybe your dad is good at managing money, and you would like that quality for yourself.

So if you dream about kissing your sister, maybe you just admire something about her. Maybe it’s her confidence, her independence or charisma. They are qualities that people may want to adopt.

So don’t be scared, there is nothing strange about having a sexual dream about a member of your family. You are just projecting admiration towards that person.
