What are the benefits of omega-3 to the heart and kidneys? – GOOD SHAPE

Omega-3 fatty acids, due to their antioxidant properties, can protect the cardiovascular system from oxidative stress and thrombotic complications. They have the power to reduce cholesterol levels, triglycerides and oxidative stress profile.

Thus, reducing cell toxicity by regulating oxidative stress is a critical factor for the survival of any cell, including kidney and heart cells. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk for coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis, which could be reduced by using these supplements.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFA) have been used as part of the human diet for many years. The supplemental use of these essential fatty acids and their derivatives can offer multiple health benefits to patients with renal failure and positively affect cell membrane structure, in addition to exerting anti-inflammatory effects.

Many studies have shown that omega-3s are also effective in reducing albuminuria (protein elimination in the urine) in patients with glomerular disease, such as IgA nephropathy, this effect being dose-dependent. Albuminuria is a well-established early marker not only for kidney damage, but also as a cardiovascular risk factor. It is a predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, as well as all-cause mortality in the general population.

Therefore, omega-3 fatty acids may have cardio and nephroprotective effects in healthy individuals as well, through modulation of this protein excretion in the urine.
