We reveal the faces behind 10 Brazilians who are well known by name only

There are some famous people that we hear a lot about, mainly by name, but that we don’t know how to recognize who they are. So much so that if they passed in front of us in the market, we wouldn’t even know. They are businessmen, artists, TV directors, among others that we only know by name, but we have never seen their faces.

1. Herbert Richers

If there is something as repeated as the films shown on TV afternoons, it is the phrase: “Brazilian version, Herbert Richers”. After all, who is this Herbet Richers? This famous unknown founded the largest dubbing studio in Latin America and has produced national films since 1950. He started as a photographer in Rio de Janeiro and, in 1946, was hired by Walt Disney, who was in Brazil, to film a documentary.

Thus, he was invited several times to visit the Disney studios in Hollywood. There, he got to know the dubbing system and began to apply it to films that were broadcast on Brazilian TV, solving a problem with subtitles, which were not well visualized due to the transmission quality.

“Maestro Billy, sound on the box!”, this phrase is well known by those who watched Caldeirão do Huck, but few people saw or noticed the DJ who commanded the songs on the program. Fernando Carreiro de Mello was born in São Paulo, in 1971, and graduated in advertising. His career began at Band FM, later moving to Jovem Pan radio, where he helped found the program Pânico. In 2001, he was invited by Luciano Huck to participate in Caldeirão, where he remained until 2015. Afterwards, he specialized in music production for games and works in this area in Berlin.

4. Oscar Niemeyer

One of the greatest architects in the world, Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho was born in Rio de Janeiro and arrived in the world in 1907. He began his own work with the Conjunto Arquitetônico da Pampulha, in Belo Horizonte. Afterwards, he was called to participate in the project to create Brasilia and was one of the architects involved in the creation of the UN headquarters in New York. Niemeyer has several works around the world and worked until a few days before leaving us, aged 104, in 2012.

5. Romero Britto

Well known all over the world for the unique style of his works, Romero was born in Recife, in 1963. At the age of 8, he started making paintings and, at 14, he had his first exhibition and sold his first painting. Years later, he decided to stop studying law and move to Miami, USA. With the growing interest in his work, in 1990 he started a company to sell products with his art, Britto Central. Over the years, he has designed for campaigns for companies such as Pepsi and Disney, and in 2005, he earned the title of Florida State Ambassador for the Arts.

6. Rodrigo Carelli

Carelli was most famous for his work directing A Fazenda, but he is responsible for several other reality shows, such as Top Chef, Power Couple, Canta Comigo, Dancing Brasil and Ilha Record. His start, in this program format, was as director of Casa dos Artistas, on SBT, a huge success in 2001. In addition, he was also responsible for the late Lual MTV.

7. Roberto Marinho

Roberto Marinho has had a lifetime dedicated to communication. He was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1904, the son of journalist Irineu Marinho, founder of the newspaper O Globo. At the age of 26, Roberto took charge of the company and began to expand it. Thus, he created Rádio Globo, in 1944; the future Editora Globo, in 1952; and TV Globo, in 1965.

Still, in 1991, it launched Globosat — developer of paid channels, such as GNT, Globo News, Multishow and Sportv — and Globo.com, in 1999. Finally, Roberto Marinho was responsible for Projac (Jacarepaguá Project), the largest production in Latin America, opened in 1995. In addition, it was also concerned with the social side, through projects to promote education and culture, with the Roberto Marinho Foundation, inaugurated in 1977.

8. Benedito Ruy Barbosa

“A soap opera by Benedito Ruy Barbosa”, this is another phrase often repeated on TV over the years. The “official” author of the Brazilian rural environment was born in 1931, in the city of Gália, in the interior of São Paulo. He is responsible for several dramaturgy classics in our country, such as O Rei do Gado, Terra Nostra, Cabocla, Sinhá Moça, Pantanal, Renascer, Meu Pedacinho de Chão and Velho Chico.

He began his career as a proofreader for the newspaper Estado de S. Paulo and became a sports reporter for the newspaper Ultima Hora and Gazeta Esportiva, in addition to being a copywriter and advertising scriptwriter. However, luckily for us, it was in soap operas that he found his true vocation.

9. Lombardi

The famous voice of Silvio Santos shows, Lombardi started out as a presenter on TV Paulista, which is now TV Globo, and they continued to work together for 40 years. The announcer had been at the station for 15 years and followed Silvio when he inaugurated SBT. In addition to TV, Luiz Lombardi Netto hosted two radio programs until he left us in 2009.

10. Marlene Mattos

Greatly responsible for transforming the then model Xuxa Meneghel into the “Queen of the Little People”, when she was his manager. Marlene was born in São José de Ribamar, Maranhão, in 1950 and started at TV Globo as a typist, going through several positions. In 1983, she met Xuxa on TV Manchete and they worked together until 2002. In addition to the presenter, she also managed athletes, such as Leila and Virna, from volleyball, Kaká and Dida, from soccer. She also had passages through Band, SBT and RedeTV!, in addition to being responsible for bringing the only Michael Jackson show held in Brazil, in 1993.
